Yoruba freedom fighter, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has been arrested in Cotonou, Benin Republic by security operatives in the West African country.Igboho was arrested Monday night after fleeing Nigeria to evade arrest by Nigeria’s secret police.
A source privy to his departure from Nigeria said he had perfected plans to secretly escape from Nigeria through Cotonou and was heading to Germany.
He was, however, nabbed by security operatives in the neighboring country.
Speaking with SaharaReporters, a source privy to the incident, said, “Sunday Igboho has been arrested in Cotonou. He was arrested about an hour ago.
“He was supposed to travel to Germany through Cotonou this night. He wanted to leave Africa through Cotonou. He was arrested by security operatives in Cotonou.
He was arrested at an airport in Cotonou on Monday night, a top source familiar with the matter told our correspondent.
Igboho was arrested by the security forces in Benin Republic about three weeks after the Department of State Services declared him wanted for allegedly stockpiling arms, an allegation he has since denied.
Security agents have chased away agitators for Yoruba nation using hot water from water canon, while one was reportedly killed by a stray bullet fired by agents.
Some of the agitators, who stormed the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park, Ojota, the venue for the Yoruba rally, sang the Yoruba Nation anthem displaying banners, posters and placards containing their demands.
Participants at the rally comprising of Yoruba women and men in white attires arrived at the venue unannounced while the Lagos Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, addressed journalists.
The police suddenly showered hot water and teargas cannisters on the agitators causing the agitators to leave the venue.
A few minutes later, shots were fired to scare them further away while some of the agitators were seen getting dragged into an armoured tank by Policemen, SaharaReporters said.
In a video obtained by The Republican News, the attack by the police has claimed a life a young sales girl. She was seen lying lifeless in the pool of her blood. The eyewitnesses confirmed that she was hit by bullets fired by the Nigerian security agents.
Defying the heavy presence of security operatives, Yoruba Nation agitators under the aegis of Ilana Omo Oodua have shown up at the Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota, Lagos.
The protesters gathered at the Ojota venue in their numbers when the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, CP Hakeem Odumosu was addressing journalists, The Nation reports.
The protesters lamented the rising insecurity in the southwest, they also decried the attack on Sunday Igboho’s residence.
While raising flags, sharing fliers on the Yoruba Nation, they also chanted “Yoruba Nation Now, No going back”, “Igboho Oosa”, “No retreat, No surrender”
Odumosu while addressing Journalists, stated that protesters have the right to protest, but it is not the right time to protest due to the destruction that followed the last #EndSARS protests. (The Nation)
