Igbo Renaissance Forum, a Pan Igbo Movement, has vehemently condemned the call by the National President of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF), Alhaji Yerima Shettima, for the arrest of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, the Minority Leader in the Senate.
In a statement signed by its International Coordinator, Nze Ugo-Akpe Onwuka (Oyi), the organisation made it clear that such unfortunate call is a classical case of comparing apples to oranges.
The statement issued today, Wednesday, November 25, 2020, reads: “We wish to express our deepest disappointment at the grossly unfortunate call by the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, AYCF, for the arrest of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe following the order of a court to remand Senator Ali Ndume in Kuje Correctional Centre, over his failure to produce the former Pension Task Team Chairman, Abdulrasheed Maina in court.
“We want to unequivocally state that such hatchet job by a Youth organization is a terrible development at this stage of our national life.
“It is sad that Alhaji Yerima Shettima is still stuck in his tribal quandary, and has been so blinded to see things from objective and realistic national perspectives.
“It is sad and heartbreaking that the instead of commending the court for taking such an action that would deter other looters in the Nigerian state in line with the Federal Government’s push for zero tolerance to corruption, this youth leader veered dangerously off course and started making demands that ultimately makes corruption look like a noble venture.
“We would not hesitate to advise Alhaji Yerima Shettima to retrace his steps and cease from being used as a hatchet man.
“We call on President Muhammadu Buhari to take immediate actions to prevent the desecration of the judiciary by such unguarded and vexatious narratives from tribally sequestered minds.
“It is very pertinent to note that if such rhetorics are ignored and those who propagate such divisive and unintelligent narratives are allowed to go scot free, it would surely embolden such myopic and tribally twisted elements to rubbish the judiciary and other arms of government in future.
“Igbo Renaissance Forum demands that Alhaji Yerima Shettima be made to withdraw his putrid statement which goes to paint the judiciary in a very terrible light.
“Comparing the case of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe to that of Senator Ali Ndume is a classical case of comparing apples to oranges, and this can only happen where intelligence has been suspended based on pecuniary interests.
“Finally, we want to state that we would not stand by and watch hired hands raise questionable issues with the ultimate aim of targeting Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe for harassment.”
The president of Arewa Youths Consultative Forum, Yerima Shettima, has said that the North will go to war if, according to him, the southern region of Nigeria tries to remove president Muhammadu Buhari from government using the ongoing nationwide and international #EndSARS protest launched spontaneously by the Nigerian youths against police killings, police brutality, bad governance and other pressing issues.
According to him, the whole protest is to shortchange the north from completing their tenure in government leadership.
While speaking with journalists in Minna, Shettima claimed that the Southern region of Nigeria is trying to shortchange the north which, according to him, was what happened after the death of Yar-adua, the late Ex-Prsident of northern extraction.
He claimed the north is primed for war should Buhari be kicked out of government for bad governance that has become the reality on the country since the administration came onboard.
According to him, “Since 1999, the south has been cheating us as regards to the office of the president.
“When Obasanjo was the President, nobody disturbed him until after his complete eight years in office.
“Immediately our brother took over, they went against him until he died. Instead of using another Northerner to complete his tenure, they forced Jonathan on us.
“Now our brother Buhari is in power again, they are using everything against him forgetting that we still have 8 years after his tenure to equal that of Jonathan and Obasanjo.
“The point is that we the Northerners are not going to allow it. We will go to war if the protesters ever demand for Buhari to resign or an end of Nigeria like some of them are doing in Anambra State.”
It would be recalled that millions of Nigerians as well as those in the Diaspora have taken to the streets under the #endsars protests to condemn the incessant killings of the youths by the police. They are also demanding for good governance among several other demands.
The protests have gained international attention as well as support and solidarity, with many foreigners endorsing the protests.
Although the police have effected a swift reform of the system, the efforts have been rejected by the protesters who have said that the moves are inadequate.
More than one month after issuing a quit notice to Nigerians of Igbo extraction to leave the North before October 1, 2017, Arewa youths, have again, called on the United Nations (UN) to pronounce Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist organisation.
Addressing newsmen in Abuja, on Thursday, the Arewa youths, who converged under the aegis of Coalition of Northern Groups, also called on the UN to intervene, by initiating processes for a peaceful referendum, saying that it was the only option to finally settle the Biafran issue.
In a letter addressed to the UN and dated 12th of July, 2017, the groups said since the end of the Nigerian Civil War, Igbo have intermittently continued to taunt and rebel against other parts of the country, by demanding to secede and form an independent country. (The Sun)
