DSS Accuses Wike Of Sponsoring Abuja Protests |The Republican News

The Department of State Services has accused the Governor of Rivers State, Mr.  Nyesom Wike, of sponsoring protests to disrupt public peace in strategic Federal Government’s offices in Abuja and its environs.

The DSS said that the plot behind the alleged protests was to provoke a violent breach of peace in the Federal Capital Territory.

The DSS stated this in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday by its spokesperson, Mr. Tony Opuiyo.

He said that the sinister plot by Wike to disrupt the machinery of governance in strategic Federal Government agencies by provoking a violent breach of peace was discovered during an intelligence gathering.

He said the plan was aimed at causing crisis during the Christmas and the New Year festivities.

However, Wike has denied the allegation, wondering whether those who protested against him in the past were also sponsored.

The governor said he had nothing to do with the man being accused of organising the protests.

But the DSS insisted that Wike had secured the services of Mr. Ugochinyere Ikenga, a personal aide to the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, to mobilise hoodlums to execute the plan.

Opuiyo stated that the aim of the plot was intended to divert public and international attention from the ongoing police investigation into “the unwholesome role played by the governor and some of his cronies in the violence that trailed the re-run election in Rivers State which resulted in the gruesome murder of civilians including the beheading of DSP Mohammed Alkali and some of his colleagues as well as the brutalisation of the Independent National Electoral Commission (members of ) staff who failed to do the bidding of the governor.”

Opuiyo added that in furtherance of this plot, protesters were to besiege the National Human Rights Commission, the INEC headquarters, the National Assembly complex, the Nigerian Army and the Police headquarters as well as the British High Commission, US Embassy and the United Nations Secretariat, Abuja.

This, the DSS spokesperson said, was to raise false alarm that Rivers State was under the siege of security agencies during the elections.

He said that while the obvious aim was to draw public sympathy and international attention to spurious allegations of involvement of federal agencies in the violence that marred the last elections in Rivers State, Opuiyo insisted that the actual objective was really to trigger violent action against the government and create opportunity for those he called idlers to join the deceitful protest.

He said,  “Part of the orchestration is to provoke the security agencies and prompt them to take action against the protesters that could result in bloodletting.

“It is in this line that Ikenga had gone to the outskirts of Abuja to mobilise unemployed youths to carry out his bidding.

“All this was to be done for a fee and resources to be provided from the treasury of the Rivers State Government. It is also worrisome that  Ikenga  would engage in this nefarious plot when, after his last arrest earlier this year by the DSS, he had pledged to be law abiding and not to cause a breach of the peace.”

Opuiyo said that the trio of Emeka Idiba,Ugo Apaumagha and Ejike Nwachukwu had been arrested and were helping the DSS with further investigations.

He said, “These men were picked up at the mobilisation venue trying to perfect the logistics for this unholy enterprise.

“The young men were hired by Ikenga to take custody of items and materials for the planned violent protest.

“The recovered items include banners, placards and posters with denigrating, inciting and hate inscriptions meant to impinge the authority of the Federal Government and further subvert the entire machinery of governance in the country.

“In order to make this look credible, Ikenga and his cohorts had adopted such groups as Lawyers in Defence of Democracy and Citizens for Good Governance as cover to supposedly make them look like serious minded civil rights groups and thus bring them into collision course with security agencies.”

Opuiyo added that  investigations had so far revealed that while Ikenga was the field organiser and coordinator of the planned protest, he alleged that Wike was his sole financial sponsor.

But Wike said in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents that he was not responsible for the failed protest.

He said, “Was I the one who also organised the protest against myself? Why can’t they also tell us those behind that?

“I don’t know the man you just mentioned as being the suspect. I’m not interested in such protests.

“All I’m interested in is peace in my state and I have said this before. I think the DSS is partisan.”

Also, the Rivers State Government has described the statement by the DSS as a false and baseless alarm.

The Commissioner for Information and Communication in Rivers State, Dr. Austin Tam-George, said, “It is an irresponsible scaremongering by an agency that seems bent on a mission to blackmail the governor of Rivers State and bring the state government into disrepute.

“Governor Wike is a man of peace and would never orchestrate disturbances in any part of the country. The Rivers State Government challenges the DSS to leave Governor Wike alone, and instead focus their operational attention on the Boko Haram insurgency that has killed over 70, 000 people, and displaced six million Nigerians in the past six years.”

Saraki has also stated that he would  not condone law breaking by his aides. (Punchng.com)

Rivers Rerun: Police To Demand Wike’s Call Data This Week |The Republican News

The Police team, currently investigating some emerging issues during the rerun elections in Rivers State on December 10, will this week write telecommunication firms for the call data of Governor Nyesom Wike, The PUNCH has learnt.

Wike, in alleged telephone calls before the rerun polls in the state, instructed some electoral officials and other aides to rig the election.

An audio clip, alleged to be the recording of such conversation, has since been released, where a voice, said to belong to Wike, issued various directives, including a death threat.

It was gathered in Abuja that the investigation team, set up by the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, would demand the details of Wike’s calls before, during and shortly after the election.

A senior police source said the detectives would carry out forensic analysis on the governor’s incoming and outgoing telephone calls, including the name of the callers, the numbers dialled, the time, date and duration of the calls, as well as SMS.

“Obtaining the CDR shouldn’t pose any difficulty to the investigators because the telecom firms have it on their exchange. ‘‘Forensic analysis of the audio tapes would be matched with the call logs, which will also assist in identifying the voice prints of the suspects,” a source said.

Further findings indicated that the leaked audio of the telephone calls would be matched against the governor’s voice print to determine if he was involved in the alleged communication, allegedly meant to rig the poll.

The voice print is a set of measurable characteristics of a human voice that uniquely identifies an individual.

The IG had, on Saturday, announced the setting up of a team of detectives to conduct forensic analysis on the audio of a telephone call, purportedly made by Wike in respect of the concluded rerun elections.

The team was also mandated to conduct a thorough investigation into a statement credited to the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Yakubu Mahmud, in which he said 70 infractions were committed during the December 10, 2016, rerun polls in Rivers State.

The IG said the team would unravel those who were directly or indirectly responsible for such incidents and bring them to justice.

The investigative team, which is headed by a Deputy Commissioner of Police, has 30 days to complete the investigation and submit its report, which the Force spokesman, Donald Awunah, said would be made public.

An online medium, SaharaReporters had posted an audio clip of telephone calls allegedly made by Wike, in which he allegedly instructed some electoral officials on how to rig the election.

In another audio, a voice was heard threatening to kill some electoral officials if they failed to carry out the directives for which they were bribed.

Meanwhile, Wike, however, said on Sunday that his administration and people of the state would not be a party to the police probe of the December 10 rerun elections, describing such investigation as phony.

The Rivers State governor, who spoke at a victory thanksgiving mass of the Peoples Democratic Party at Our Lady Chaplaincy of Catholic Institute of West Africa in Port Harcourt, said the probe into the rerun elections had a predetermined goal to indict the PDP and commence a politically-motivated prosecution of some members.

“The police cannot deliberately murder Rivers people in cold blood and turn around to investigate.

“We are not a party to their so-called panel. We have passed that stage and we cannot fall into the trap of a panel of inquiry. After killing our people, you want us to assist you to unravel what? It is the police that killed our people,” he added.

The governor wondered why the police would claim it wanted to investigate issues surrounding the Rivers rerun elections, claiming that the police were involved in the attempt to subvert the will of the people.

He accused the Police High Command of refusing to prosecute the APC chieftains allegedly caught on camera printing fake result sheets ahead of the elections.

Wike added that petitions to the Police High Command on the negative activities of an Assistant Commissioner of Police and a police commander in the state were disregarded.

The governor added, “If it is a country that believes in its image, so many people would have lost their jobs. They cannot ask themselves why 28,000 policemen, yet to be ascertained  number of soldiers, police dogs and horses, gunboats and helicopters could not police ordinary legislative elections.

“It is because the police were the ones committing the fraud, violence and election-materials snatching. We are accusing the police of mass murder and they turn around to set up a panel of inquiry.

“After killing our people, you fraudulently set up a panel of inquiry. Up till now, they don’t know that we are far ahead. This panel is a mere booby trap to indict the PDP members. If they cared about lives, they wouldn’t do what they did.”

In his sermon, Reverend Monsignor Pius Kii said that the coalition of forces would never defeat Rivers State.

The thanksgiving service was attended by the PDP leaders, senators, House of Representatives members, House of Assembly members and local government caretaker committee chairmen.  (Punchng.com)

Rivers: IGP Formed Panel To Investigate Audio Tape |The Republican News

Faith Yahaya, Abuja and Precious Dikewoha,

Rivers: IGP raises panel to probe audio tape

Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris

•Wike accuses APC of being behind the show •You’ve being caught pants down and cannot find where to hide, says APC

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris has raised a team of detectives and experts to conduct a thorough investigation into the audio tape released by online medium SaharaReporters.

SaharaReporters claimed that the voice on the tape was that of Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, in which he said he would kill officials of the electoral commission who fail to honour their words to rig in his favour.

A statement in Abuja yesterday by the Force Spokesman, Don Awunah, stated that the investigative team is mandated to conduct forensic analysis on the audio report. It is also to look into the statement of the INEC chairman, Prof. Yakubu Mahmud that “there were 70 incidents that tended to derail the  December 10, 2016 re-run elections in Rivers State.”

The police have also urged the government of Rivers State and INEC to avail the team available facts.

“The Government of Rivers State and INEC are enjoined to avail the investigative team with facts at their disposal and grant them the desired cooperation and assistance to achieve a comprehensive and conclusive investigation.”

However, the Rivers State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Austin Tam-George has dismissed the telephone conversation allegedly made between Wike and some officials of INEC as a fabrication.

He noted that Sahara Reporters, which released the audio acted for the All Progressives Congress (APC), and described it as outright lie, saying whole thing was an  allegation and fabrication, as he added that there was no time that the governor made any contact with officials of INEC for the purpose of rigging the rerun elections.

Tam-George said that modern technology has made it possible for a person’s voice to be manipulated, alleging that SaharaReporters has been the propaganda arm of the APC.

He said, “No one would have thought that the APC and its cowardly media allies would resort to an audio impersonation of Governor Nyesom Wike, using a voice changer technology. The voice changer technology is often used by teenagers mainly in South Korea and Japan to launch innocent technology prank at each other, mainly for laughs.”

Reacting yesterday, the APC sate Publicity Secretary, Chris Finebone said, “Having been caught in the web of their own machinations, what do you expect Governor Nyesom Wike and his Commissioner to say?

“Often when anyone is caught pants down, the most convenient and ready response is to blame and blackmail others. The truth remains that Gov. Wike in that SaharaReporters’ audio tape was caught pants down and he simply cannot find where to hide.”

The police asked “The election observers, civil society groups, human rights watchers and other stakeholders to assist the team with valuable information they may have.”

The investigative team which is headed by a Deputy Commissioner of Police has 30 days to complete the investigation and submit report.

Promising that findings from the investigation will be made public, the police Force also noted that it is committed to enthroning the principles of democratic policing and ensuring that the IGP’s master plan on election security takes hold in the country in accordance with international best practices and core values of Policing with integrity. 2019 Election Will Be A Tusnami, Says Gov. Wike |The Republican News

Rivers State Govenor, Nyesom Wike

Chukwudi Akasike, Port Harcourt

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has said that the “invasion” of the state by security agents during the December 10 legislative rerun was an indication that the 2019 general election will be a Tsunami of sort.

Wike said Nigerians should expect fighter jets to be used during the next general elections, wondering why the military, 28,000 policemen and gunboats should be used for an ordinary legislative rerun.

The governor, who addressed journalists on Thursday night, observed that even Divisional Police Officers in the state were transferred a day before the rerun.

He said, “If you can have an invasion by the military, police, DSS and INEC for an ordinary legislative rerun election, then if you have presidential and governorship election, it will be a Tsunami.

“There will be fighter jets; they will locate people’s houses and bomb them because that is the only thing remaining. That is why I said anybody who is thinking about 2019 is wasting his time.

“28,000 policemen, three gunboats and others; even DPOs were transferred a day to the election. Some of the security agents had charms in their vehicles for the legislative rerun. They must bomb everybody who does not agree with them,” he added.

On the audio clip alleging that he threatened officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Wike described the material (audio clip) as contrived, adding that it was sponsored by the All Progressives Congress.

He said, “When you look at certain things, you just laugh. At no time did I speak to any electoral officer, let alone issue threats to any electoral officer. There is nowhere I spoke to an electoral officer, threatening him or her as the case maybe.

“It is totally not correct. The major issue is: did the police participate in rigging election? Did the army participate in rigging the election? Did INEC compromise?

“Let them face the reality and stop chasing shadows. What is audio clip? What can’t this government do? I don’t have an orderly; I don’t have a chief security officer, I don’t have camp commandant. All were taken away before the election.”

The governor said rather than bring the SARS Commander, Mr. Akin Fakorede, to justice for the roles he played during the rerun, as captured on video, the police authorities arrested the policemen who accompanied him (Wike) to stop the commander from swapping Rivers East Senatorial District results sheet.

He said, “They have now arrested and detained the policemen, who accompanied me to the collation centre to stop him. Even Akin Fakorede, who was caught on video, has been released so that police can bungle it. What kind of country is this?

But the State Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mr. Chris Finebone, said Wike was caught pants down and had nowhere to hide.

Finebone said, “It is important to state that the APC have on several occasions in the past been brought under scrutiny by Sahara Reporters to the amusement of Wike and the PDP. But today, they have found it convenient to associate the APC with Sahara Reporters.

“That is absolute falsehood coming from him. Governor Wike should think of a better response, which we doubt he has because the audio recording is clear to everyone that it is the voice of the governor threatening to kill people.” (Punchng.com)
