Girl Sacrificed To Idol In Lagos Shrine, 10 Arrested |The Republican News

By Christopher Oji

Lagos State Police Command has discovered a shrine in Iwaya area of the metropolis, where children are sacrificed to an idol. The victims are allegedly abducted while on errands for their parents.
Already, 10 persons have been arrested sequel to the discovery of the corpse of a four-year-old girl in the shrine.
According to the victim’s parents, Mr and Mrs Suleiman Taiwo, their daughter and two of her siblings had gone to the mosque in the afternoon to pray.
The little girl did not return with her siblings, prompting the parents to raise the alarm. A search party later found her corpse, at midnight, in the shrine behind the house. Her neck was slashed and her blood spilled on the shrine.
Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, at a press briefing yesterday, said the police received a distress call that the dead body of a little girl was found in a shrine and swung into action.
He said: “On a fateful day, DPO of Sabo Division alerted me that one Suleiman Taiwo and wife came to the station with the dead body of their four-year-old daughter.
“Upon questioning, they said the deceased, with her two siblings, went to pray at the mosque by 1 pm and wasn’t seen since then. It was in the course of the search that they found the deceased at a shrine where Ogun (idol) is worshipped, near their house. Her throat was slashed and blood spilled on the idol.
“We recovered the knife they used in the murder of the innocent girl. We arrested 10 persons, including the girls’ parents because they are the principal suspects. They are in our custody and are being interrogated. We are not saying that they killed the child, but there is a kind of conspiracy in the matter. The parents have some questions to answer.
“We will question all of them. The area is densely populated. These days, people have thrown morals to the dustbin because I don’t know what a four-year-old child has done to be murdered in the most horrific manner. There is a conspiracy. How could the child be killed in a densely populated area like that and nobody reported to the police?
“The shrine has been in that compound for a long time. We discovered that the owner of the shrine died a long time ago, but people come from different areas to worship. There is a conspiracy of silence. The occupants must have known that human sacrifices were done in the shrine because this is not the first time such has happened. Many children may have been used for sacrifice in the shrine.
“After an investigation, we will charge the suspects to court.”  (The Sun)

15-year-old Girl Raped Twice In One Night By Separate Attackers |The Republican News

A 15-year-old girl was raped twice in one night by two separate attackers.

One of her rapists was a man she flagged down for help after she escaped from the first attacker, police say.

Authorities in Birmingham, United Kingdom, have launched a major investigation after the girl was subjected to a “horrifying ordeal” on Tuesday night.

She was reportedly with a friend at Witton train station at about 7 pm when a man approached her and led her to a secluded area, before raping her.

Shortly after the attack, the victim walked away from the area and flagged down a passing car to ask for help at about 2am.

Police say when she got into the vehicle, she was raped for a second time by what is believed to be a second offender.

The girl then returned home and the police were called.

On Thursday, detectives from British Transport Police and West Midlands Police launched a joint investigation to help identify the offenders and witnesses to the incidents.

DCI Tony Fitzpatrick from British Transport Police said: “This was a horrifying ordeal for this young girl and we have specially trained officers supporting her.

“It is now vitally important we investigate exactly what happened on Tuesday morning as well as identifying offenders for both of these awful incidents.”

The first offender is described as an Asian man in his early 20s with light skin, brown eyes, a skinny build, and about 6ft. He was wearing a grey track suit top and bottoms and black trainers.

A second offender is described as an Asian man in his early 20s, 5ft 6ins to 5fit 7ins, of large build with a tight beard. He was wearing a blue jumper and black jeans.

DCI Fitzpatrick added: “Whilst this incident happened during the early morning and there may not have been many people around, I would be keen to speak with anyone who may have been in the area at the time.

“If you were passing by the station and saw two girls walking with an older man, then please get in touch immediately.

“Likewise, if you saw any suspicious vehicles close to Witton station close to 2am, then please get in touch as soon as possible.”  (

2 Prostitutes Nabbed For Killing Man

By Lawrence Enyoghasu

The liaison between one Adeyinka Olayinka and a commercial sex worker, Kudirat, in Ifo, Ogun State, has ended in tragedy, with the man stabbed to death.
Daily Sun gathered that Olayinka, who was supervising construction work, had taken Kudirat to a hotel to pass the night on Tuesday, but it turned out to be a fatal error.
According to ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi, spokesman for the Ogun State Police Command, when Olayinka had a disagreement with Kudirat, popularly called Angela, over payment, the lady invited her friend, Esther, to join her to retrieve the money. In the melee, the man was stabbed to death.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the victim contracted Kudirat to pass the night with him on an agreed amount, but the deceased reneged on their agreement, which led to hot argument between them. While the argument was going on, Esther, who is a friend to Angela, broke a bottle and injured the deceased’s friend who was at the scene, while Angela used the broken part of the bottle to stab the deceased in the armpit, thereby cutting one of his nerves, consequent upon which he bled to death,” Abimbola stated.
It was also gathered that the manager of the hotel quickly alerted the police. The DPO, Ifo Division, CSP Anthony Haruna, led his men to the scene and promptly arrested the suspects.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, has ordered the transfer of the case to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for discrete investigation and prosecution of the suspects.  (The Sun)

10 Feared Dead As Navy, Police Clash In Calabar |The Republican News

By Our Reporter

Over 10 persons were feared killed and several others injured when Naval personnel and police men clashed in Calabar, Cross River State Akim police Station opposite a military Barracks.

A policeman, who escaped death by the whiskers told Daily Sun that the police station, including the armoury was completely razed.

He said trouble started yesterday afternoon when a police traffic warden  stopped a Naval officer who got angry and ordered his boy to beat him.

He said: “As the Naval personal were battering the traffic officer, a deputy Superintendent of Police who was passing by tried to settle the dispute, but the naval personnel descended on him as well.

“A senior police officer contacted the commander in charge of the unit. We thought the matter was over until around when some Naval personnel stormed Akim police station and started shooting at officers and visitors at the station.

“The Naval personnel did not stop at shooting at people, they set the police station, including the armoury and suspects in the cell ablaze.

“ Over 10 persons were killed. I know of three policemen who were confirmed dead. Many suspects in the cell died in the inferno. I narrowly escaped death. Few of us who took to our heels survived but many others sustained injuries of varying degrees.  A witness, John Bolus said: “It was like a war-torn zone. I thought it was another civil war. I was hearing the cacophony of gun shots and I took to my heels. I think the government should do something about it. The Navy should submit to the constitution.”

When contacted Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood, said he had not been briefed. Meanwhile, the Naval authorities said, last night, only one person was shot. According to them, it was a minor incident involving a Naval officer and  a policeman, which was later resolved.            (The Sun)

My Husband Police Case Is Beyond My Control, Says Mercy Aigbe

The saga in the home of the Gentry’s seems to be far from over as star actress, Mercy Aigbe’s husband, Lanre Gentry was remanded in prison during the week for failure to meet his bail condition.

When Saturday Beats reached out to the ace actress, she made it known that she has nothing to do with her husband’s predicament. She explained that the matter was reported to the appropriate agencies and they are handling the case according to the law.

She said, “The case is no longer between my husband and I. It is now between the Office of Public Defenders, Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and my husband. The officer is the one handling the case.”

Aigbe in an emotional laden voice said that she wants her husband to know the gravity of what he has done because till date, she is still coughing out blood due to the beatings she got from him.

“I cannot be washing my dirty linen in public and that is why I do not want to go into details of my marriage. It is not in my place to send him to jail. I only reported to the appropriate authorities and I just need him to show remorse for what he has done to me. He does not know the gravity of what he has done to me, the pains that I feel right now and the trauma I have gone through. I am still in pains and I am bleeding internally because I am still coughing out blood. Instead of him to be remorseful, he was busy going online to say all sorts of things about me and concocting lies. He has been fabricating stories to taint my image because he knows I am the one with a reputation at stake. I intentionally did not say anything even though I have proof of everything I have to say. Instead of my husband to show some sense of responsibility and own up to what he did, he was busy dragging my name in the mud,” Aigbe said.

She told Saturday Beats that she endured a lot in her seven-year-old marriage but she stayed put because of her children and the people who look up to her as a role model. She said, “I endured all the things that I went through in his hands because of my children and also because of the fact that people look up to me as a role model. I have been through a lot and I pray and fast a lot so that things would go on smoothly. I have been praying and enduring a lot but this last time, the beating was brutal and he almost killed me.”

The actress told Saturday Beats that Gentry kept claiming that she was promiscuous but that it is a false statement aimed at tarnishing her image. Aigbe said it was never reported that she was promiscuous while she was a single lady, so why would she start such an act as a married woman.

“Before I got married, there was no scandal about me being promiscuous, no one could say that I was sleeping around; so why would I now do such as a married woman? If I were that promiscuous like he claims, how come no journalist has ever reported such stories about me? I have been working so hard to build my brand and now he wants to rubbish it,” she said.

She said that he husband’s major problem is his anger and although she had advised him to go for anger management classes, he refused.

“The problem with him is that he cannot control his anger and I have advised him on several occasions to see a therapist or enrol in anger management class to learn how to control his temper but he refused. He gets violent whenever he is angry and that is his problem. There is no way a couple would not fight but it does not always have to lead to physical violence. On that fateful day, he hit my head on the wall just because I found out that he was having an affair with someone very close to me and we had an argument. He came to beat me at my tailor’s place. He even beat my make-up artiste and broke her hand. It was from that place that I was rushed to the hospital very late that night. When he was beating me, he was acting as if he was possessed. Ever since he had been beating me, he had never beaten me to this extent. It was as if he had made up his mind to kill me or blind me so that my career would end. I don’t know why he is doing all this. I have offered to take him to church but whenever we get there, he would refuse to enter. I tried all my best. If only he went for therapy, all this would not have happened and I don’t have to stay with him till he kills me. Imagine if I had died that day, I wonder what kind of cover up story he would have released to the public,” the actress said.

She made it clear that she was fighting for her life. “I am fighting for my life because if I die there would be no image to protect. I just want him to sign an undertaking that nothing would happen to me because a man who is capable of sending thugs to the house is capable of anything. Someone who can set me up and lie that I have mental illness can do anything. He should sign the undertaking and we should go our different ways. If not, I would leave the case to the appropriate agency and the law would take its full course,” Aigbe said.  (

Foreign Shop Onwers In Coligny, South Africa Left In Despair After Looting

One of 30 Bangladeshi nationals who own shops said collectively, Bangladeshi business owners lost stock valued at more than R700k.

At least 30 shops owned by foreign nationals have been looted in Coligny, in North West, since the outbreak of community protests, a local businessman said on Wednesday.

“I am left with nothing, they took everything in my shop, they even took the cups I used to drink water,” said Mahammed Rubel.

“It is heartbreaking to see your neighbour looting your shop. They took everything, including my clothes. People do not have mercy, you give them credit and help them, yet they loot your shop. People you know …”

Rubel is one of 30 Bangladeshi nationals who own shops in Tlhabologang. He said collectively, Bangladeshi business owners lost stock valued at more than R700 000.

“We do not know whether we will be able to recover from this great loss, we do not have means to start. We are depending on donations from food to clothes. We have nowhere to go. We are now staying at the mosque and hope our brothers in Johannesburg will help us.”

Rubel said they would monitor the situation in Coligny before deciding on their next move.

Shops were looted on April 24 when violence erupted in Coligny following the death of a 16-year-old boy, Matlhomola Jonas Mosweu.

Motlhomola died after two farmers, Pieter Doorewaard, 26, and Phillip Schutte 34, alleged they caught him stealing sunflowers at their employer’s field in Rietfontein, near the Scotland informal settlement. They ordered him to climb onto the back of a van, intending to hand him over to the police, but according to them, he jumped out of the moving van. He suffered neck injuries and later died on his way to hospital.

But an eyewitness told the police Matlhomola was thrown out of a moving van.

His death triggered a mass protest that left several houses and vehicles burnt, shops looted and damaged as the community demanded that his alleged killers be arrested.

The protest stopped after the two handed themselves over to police on April 25. But renewed violence erupted on May 8 when Doorewaard and Schutte were released on R5 000 bail each.

Furious residents torched three houses and police were forced to fire teargas and rubber bullets to disperse a crowd that wanted to torch a house in Rietvlei.

Schools have been disrupted since the outbreak of the violence, but on Wednesday, pupils at one of the high schools returned to class.

The situation was calm on Wednesday. A police helicopter monitored the situation.

The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Reverend Olasupo Ayokunle, has called on the Federal Government to prosecute some herdsmen arrested in connection with the recent killings in Kaduna and Benue states.

He said it was only when the suspects were prosecuted that tension that had risen in the two states would reduce.

He spoke in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, during a special service held at the First Baptist Church (Miracle Cathedral).

The Centenary Estate built by the Ekiti Conference of the Nigerian Baptist Convention was also inaugurated by the Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Adeyemo Adejugbe.

Ayokunle, who is also the President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention, warned that failure to stop the unprovoked killings by suspected herdsmen in some parts of the country could spark off war in the country.

In a sermon entitled, “Moving Forward, Exhibiting the Features of a Prevailing Church,” Ayokunle said the church had a duty to pray for Nigeria to overcome all its social, economic and political problems.

He said, “There is a need to pray more for Nigeria because it is only prayers that can save us. Let us continue to pray for the leadership of this country. But I want to urge the government to check the menace of the herdsmen in some parts of the country.

“We are calling on the Federal Government to prosecute the herdsmen arrested in connection with the recent killings in Benue and Southern Kaduna because this will ease tension in the two states.

“We also want the Federal Government to investigate, through intelligence gathering, those unpatriotic Nigerians supplying the herdsmen with weapons being used to perpetrate evil.

“If the government fails to stop the provocation by the Fulani (herdsmen), they should be prepared for war. No ethnic group has a monopoly of violence and no ethnic group should be a monster to others.”

Meanwhile, security operatives on Monday arrested 18 suspects in connection with the unrest in Kabala-West and Ungwan-Mu’azu in Kaduna-South Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Governor Nasir el-Rufai’s Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Samuel Aruwan, said this in a statement on Monday.

There was commotion in Kabala-West and Kaduna-South Local Government Area on Monday as an angry mob stabbed to death a suspected thief in the area.

It was gathered that the suspect had burgled a house on Kaje Street located along the Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway of the state.          (

Monarch Flees As Fulani Herdsmen Behead Man In Delta State

Fulani Herdsman

Ovie Okpare, Warri

Palpable tension has enveloped Urhuoka-Abraka community in Ethiope-East Local Government Area of Delta State following the killing of a member of the community by armed men suspected to be Fulani herdsmen.

Sources said the incident occurred on Monday around Ovre-Abraka bush where indigenes of the community farm.

It was gathered that the young man, a welder, who was later identified as Solomon Ejor, was killed while trying to rescue his mother, Mrs Maria Ejor, who had gone to Ovre to farm, and was held hostage by the herdsmen in her farm.

On getting to the place, a confrontation ensued, which led to the woman’s freedom, but Solomon was unlucky as he was shot before being beheaded by the suspected herdsmen.

It was gathered that over 50 local farmers had been killed in the scuffle since the struggle began even as the state government and security operatives were accused of playing politics with the rampaging killing in the area.

Irked by the continued killing and inaction of the traditional ruler, angry indigenes retrieved the mutilated body of the victim and went to the palace of the Ovie of Oruarivie-Abraka to dump the corpse and register their grievances.

Upon sighting the angry mob with the corpse of the slain welder, the monarch was learnt to have reportedly fled the palace through the back gate to an unknown destination probably to avoid seeing the corpse which is a taboo for a monarch in Urhobo.

The protesters invaded the palace destroying cars and air conditioners with a threat to torch the palace less for the timely intervention of a detachment of army personnel.

The President General of the community, Dr. Tedwins Emudainohwo, whose car was also destroyed in the mayhem said, “They brought the corpse to the palace with the intention of desecrating the palace coupled with the fact that it is a taboo for the Ovie to see a corpse.

“The victim, in company with his younger brother and two friends, had gone to the bush to rescue their mother who had gone to the farm and was trapped in the bush, following shootings by herdsmen in the area.”

“Their mother had gone to her farm on Monday to work. While there, she started hearing gunshots inside the bush and had to take cover at a spot. In her hiding position, she was able to see some Fulani herdsmen walking past as they continued shooting. After the situation had calmed down, she called her children and told them that she was trapped inside the bush.”     (
