Imo Gubernatorial: Supreme Court Voids Candidature Of Okorocha’s Son-in-law, Uche Nwosu |The Republican News

Mr Uche Nwosu

The Supreme Court, on Friday, voided Rochas Okoracha’s son-in-law, Uche Nwosu, as the governorship candidate of the Action Alliance in the 2019 general elections in Imo State, over double nomination.

The apex court, in its judgment delivered by Justice Adamu Augie, upheld the judgment of the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division.

News Agency of Nigeria recalls that the court had, about two months ago, upheld the decision of the Federal High Court, which also voided Nwosu’s candidature.

A chieftain of the Action Peoples Party, Mr Uche Nnadi, had dragged Nwosu to the Federal High Court where the court held that he was not qualified to stand for the election.

The court based its verdict on the fact that Nwosu already had a valid ticket of the All Progressives Congress.

Unsatisfied with the ruling of the Court, Nwosu approached the Court of Appeal to put the decision to further test.

The Court dismissed all issues raised by Nwosu in his appeal.

Not satisfied with the decision of the Court of Appeal, Nwosu headed for the apex court to upturn the decision of the lower court.

The Supreme Court, in its judgment, dismissed Nwosu’s appeal, saying that he could benefit from his iniquity.

The Court also dismissed the argument by Nwosu’s lawyer that the suit was statute-barred.

Justice Augie said, ”The appellant cannot be allowed to benefit from his own iniquity.

“The action is not caught up by limitation of time.

“This case rests on the issue of illegality and this court cannot be used to enforce illegalities.More in Home

“This appeal is hereby dismissed.”

In his reaction shortly after the judgment was delivered, the Chairman of the APC, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, said the implication was that all the votes given to Nwosu at that election were void votes.(NAN)

                                           Imo State Govenor, Rochas Okorocha

Eniola Akinkuotu, Abuja

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested the Accountant-General of Imo State, Uzoho Casmir, for allegedly helping Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, to launder N1.05bn for the governorship and assembly elections on Saturday.

The allegations were contained in an EFCC situation report which was obtained by The PUNCH on Friday.

Okorocha, who is a member of the All Progressives Congress, is supporting his son-in-law, Nwosu of the Action Alliance against the governorship candidate of the APC, Senator Hope Uzodinma.

The act earned Okorocha a suspension from the party last week.

The EFCC report read in part, “The, EFCC, Enugu Zonal Office, Thursday, March 8, 2019 arrested the Acting Accountant General of Imo State, Mr. Uzoho Casmir, on suspicion of laundering the sum of N1.050bn through a new generation bank for the governor of the state, Rochas Okorocha.

“Uzoho’s arrest followed intelligence report that the governor intended to use the money for vote buying in favour of a particular candidate in tomorrow’s gubernatorial election. Intelligence further revealed that Mr Casmir withdrew the amount in three tranches between Tuesday and Thursday this week in the following order; N200m on Tuesday, N500m on Wednesday and N350m on Thursday.

“Meanwhile, the EFCC has blocked the traced accounts, while the arrested Accountant General has been providing useful information to the commission. Mr Casmir was before his appointment, a Director of Finance in Okorocha’s government and was in 2016 fingered in N2bn bailout fund scam, which was then given to the state by the Federal Government for the payment of salary arrears of civil servants.”   (Punch)

2019: Imo Assembly Endorses Okorocha’s Son-in-law For Governor |The Republican News

Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha

GIBSON ACHONU

Crisis brewing in the Imo State House of assembly may have escalated following the Assembly’s endorsement of Governor Rochas Okorocha’s son-in-law, Uche Nwosu, as a governorship aspirant in 2019.

Nwosu is currently the Chief of Staff in the Government House.

The House Committee Chairman on Petroleum, Imo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission and Niger Delta Development Commission, Henry Ezediaro, said Nwosu was the most qualified to take over from his father-in-law, Okorocha.

Ezediaro, who spoke at a press conference in Owerri, the state capital, on Saturday, said the decision to endorse Nwosu was reached after the majority of the state’s lawmakers declared him the best to run for the position.

He said, “After meeting with the members of the House of Assembly, we, irrespective of party affiliations, have endorsed Ugwumba Uche Nwosu. We urge him to contest the poll. If he does, we will support him to be the governor in 2019.

“On behalf of the lawmakers, we want to use this medium to appeal to the governor and thank him for his free education policy in the state, but without Uche Nwosu, the policy may die and that is why we want him to continue from where he will stop.”

The lawmaker denied there is a crisis in the House.

“The house is not in a crisis, we just disagreed on some issues,” Ezediaro added.  (Punch)
