Offa Robbery: Court Summons Saraki Over Fresh Criminal Complaint |RN

                                               Senate President Bukola Saraki

Ade Adesomoju, Abuja

A Grade I Area Court in Aco Estate, Lugbe, Abuja, has ordered the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, to serve a summons on the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, to compel him to face a criminal complaint initiated against him by a private lawyer in respect of the bloody bank robbery in which many died in Offa, Kwara State, earlier this year.

The criminal complaint was initiated by an Abuja-based lawyer and rights activist, Oluwatosin Ojaomo, whose lawyer told the court on Monday that the IGP had given assurance that the necessary court papers would be served on the Senate President.

The police had said their investigations linked Saraki to the kingpin of the robbery operation.

The Senate President is the sole defendant in the criminal complaint initiated by the private lawyer.

The criminal complaint marked, CR/196/2018, was said to have been initiated by Ojaomo under Section 89(5) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.

It sought Saraki to be summoned for allegedly ignoring police invitation to answer to an allegation involving the investigation of the suspects of the Offa robbery.

The complaint stated that Saraki’s alleged refusal to honour the invitation amounted to obstructing a criminal investigation and disobeying a public officer carrying out a lawful responsibility.

This alleged conduct, it said, was an offence punishable under Section 136 and 149 of the Penal Code Law.

The judge handling the case at the Grade 1 Area Court, Aco Estate, Lugbe, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Abdullahi Garuba Ogbede, had, on September 10 this year, ordered the issuance of a summons on Idris following Saraki’s absence from court.

On Monday, the complainant’s lawyer, Mr E. S. Marcus, said he was informed by a Deputy Superintendent of Police in the Legal Unit of the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja, identified as Mahmoud, that the IGP had directed the legal unit to ensure the prompt service of the court papers on Saraki before the next hearing date of October 3, 2018.

He said, “The defendant is not in court. At the last date, the court issued a witness summons on the IGP to come and show cause why the police failed to effect service of the criminal summons, warrant of arrest and other processes on the defendant.

“The witness summons was served on the Nigeria Police Force by the court’s registry.

“However, we received a call from DSP Mahmoud of the Legal Department of the Nigeria Police Force headquarters, that the matter has been assigned by the IGP to a particular unit of the NPF to effect the service of the summons on the defendant and arrest him.”

Marcus explained in court on Monday that his client, who was supposed to bear the responsibility of serving Saraki with the complaint, had to resort to seeking the IGP’s involvement in accordance with Section 122 of the ACJA, when it became difficult for him to serve the Senate President.

According to the lawyer, the Inspector-General of Police is required, under the law, to either produce the defendant in court or attend court to explain why the defendant was absent.

He then applied to the court to grant a short adjournment to enable the police to serve the processes on Saraki.

The judge, Ogbede, granted Marcus’ request and adjourned the case till October 3.

The criminal complaint against the Senate President read, “Criminal complaint brought pursuant to Section 89(5) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015. Please, cause a summons for a direct criminal complaint on the defendant on the following terms:

“That you, Dr Bukola Saraki, on or about the 24th day of July, 2018 within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, did refuse to honour the invitation of the Inspector-General of the Nigeria Police Force to report at the police headquarters in FCT, Abuja to answer to  an allegation involving the investigation of  some criminal suspects involved in a case which the Nigeria Police Force is currently investigating, thereby obstructing a criminal investigation and disobeying a public officer carrying out a lawful  responsibility.

“You thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 136 and 149 of the Penal Code Law, whereas, the complainant is praying the court to charge the defendant accordingly.” (Punch)

Offa Bank Robbery: Police Threaten To Arrest Saraki |RN

“The force insists that the Senate President is being expected to report to the head of investigation team at the Intelligence Response Team and should honour the invitation, otherwise the force will not hesitate to use all the instruments of the law to ensure compliance with the law.”

Molly Kilete

The Nigeria Police Force headquarters in Abuja has threatened to arrest Senate President Bukola Saraki if he fails to honour the invitation to him to report to the head of the investigation team at the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) office in Abuja.

This is just as the force headquarters has denied that it deployed policemen to besiege the homes of the Senate President and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, early Tuesday morning.

Force public relations officer, Jimoh Moshood, who made this known in a statement yesterday, insisted that Saraki, who is expected at the IRT office, must show up, in his own interest, or have himself to blame.

Moshood said that, if Saraki fails to report to the intelligence office, the police would not hesitate to “use all the instruments of the law” to ensure the Senate President’s compliance with the law.

Moshood, in the statement made available to Daily Sun, said: “The Nigeria Police Force on July 23, 2018, invited Sen. Bukola Saraki, President of the Senate, Federal Republic of Nigeria, to report to the head of investigation team at the Intelligence Response Team’s office at Guzape junction, Asokoro Extension, Abuja, today, 24th of July, 2018, at 8am for further investigation on his indictment from confessional statements from some of the five gang leaders arrested for their active participation in the Offa bank robbery and gruesome murder of more than 31 persons and snatching of 21 AK-47 rifles on the 5th of April, 2018, but the Senate President refused to honour the police invitation as at the time of this press release.

“The force, therefore, insists that the Senate President is being expected to report to the head of the investigation team at the Intelligence Response Team and should honour the invitation, otherwise the force will not hesitate to use all the instruments of the law to ensure compliance with the law.

“The Nigeria Police Force’s attention was also drawn to the innuendos in the early hours of today that some policemen were seen surrounding the residence of the Senate President; the force wishes to categorically state that there was no authorised deployment of police personnel to besiege the residence of the Senate President or his deputy, as reported in the media. The police personnel seen in pictures in the media were those in the convoy of the Senate President and others attached to him.

“However, the Inspector-General of Police has directed a thorough investigation to ascertain the facts in the episode. The force will not allow the end of justice to be perverted by this distraction.

“The Nigeria Police will ensure that the rule of law prevails in this matter.”

Journalists had gathered at the IRT’s office as early as 6:30am, taking the position to capture the arrival of the Senate President.

Special Anti-Robbery Squad personnel were also positioned in and outside the road leading to the office.

The police also prevented journalists from gaining access to the premises, saying it was an order from above.

However, the police force said that Saraki was never harassed, threatened or intimidated physically by its personnel from the Force Headquarters or any other formation.

It also denied besieging the residence of the Senate President and his deputy, Ekweremadu, early Tuesday morning and said it has set up an investigating team to unravel the presence of police personnel there.

It, therefore, called on the public to disregard and discountenance the report of the blockade of the residence, harassment and threat on Saraki in its entirety as untrue and misinforming.

Moshood, stating this at a media briefing Tuesday night at the force headquarters, however, warned that “the Nigeria Police Force will not abdicate from its constitutional responsibilities of detection of crimes and criminalities, and will always treat crime as a crime, no matter who is involved.”

Moshood further stated that “The force remains focused and will not be distracted from carrying out a discrete and thorough investigation into the indictments of the Senate President, Sen. Bukola Saraki, from confessional statements of some of the gang leaders arrested for their active participation in the Offa bank robbery.”

According to him, “it is also absolutely untrue that the Senate President, Sen. Bukola Saraki, was harassed, threatened or intimidated physically or otherwise by any police personnel.

“However, the Inspector-General of Police has directed a thorough investigation to ascertain the facts in the episode.”

Briefing the media, Jimoh said that “further to the press release from this office early this morning on the above subject, where I mentioned that the Nigeria Police Force’s attention was drawn to the innuendos in the early hours of today, 24th July, 2018, that some police personnel were seen surrounding the residence of the Senate President in Abuja, the force categorically stated that there was no authorised deployment of police personnel to besiege the residence of the Senate President or his deputy as reported in the media. The police personnel seen in pictures in the media were those in the convoy of the Senate President. (The Sun)

Offa Bank Robbery: Buhari Speaks On Saraki’s Involvement |RN

The Nigerian Senate president, Dr Bukola Saraki

The Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Kwara state, Alhaji Sulyman Buhari, has said that the President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki and the state governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed are being victimized by the President Muhammadu-led government.

Buhari said the politicians were being unnecessarily victimised over the Offa bank robbery saga.

The Publicity Secretary who was sharing the opinion of the APC in the state in an interview with the Punch said everybody knows that what is happening is a clear case of witch – hunt.

Speaking further, Buhari said, “One can recall how they started with him. The executive started with the issue of asset declaration at the Code of Conduct Tribunal which he said he was ready to face in order to prove his innocence.

“He had earlier raised the alarm that there was information from Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed that
he was to be implicated in a cult – related case.

“We know the efforts and mechanism he put in place to banish cultism in the state. So within a short time that he raised the alarm, the police came up with another allegation in connection with the Offa armed robbery allegation.

“The police said he knew something about the Offa armed robbery. It is a laughable matter to be sincere. We know the antecedent of the Senate President. He declared an asset worth almost N40 bn in 2003.

“How can such a person, a two-term governor, a senator who has been in the National Assembly for seven years and the President of the Senate for three years, be involved in the armed robbery? What is he going to gain and achieve from that? It is totally uncalled for! He has never been involved or sponsored any political crime within or outside the
state before because he is not a violent person. He does not appreciate or encourage violence. He does not even encourage thuggery.”

Asked about the confession of some of the arrested gang leaders who said Saraki bought vehicles and empowered them with vehicles and other logistics, Buhari added, “It is possible for a kind-hearted personality like him to empower anybody with vehicles and this happens everywhere.

“Go to Lagos State, a member of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajiabiamila, gave out buses to people. Many people are doing
that. Many state governors are also doing it.

“Saraki did not give out vehicles to the boys so that they could use them to rob people. One of the suspects categorically said the Senate President did not send them to rob. So the Senate President has been exonerated already.”
On the belief that the suspects are part of the Saraki ’s political family and card-carrying members of the APC, the APC spokesperson said,

“If people are saying that the suspects are part of the Saraki political family, does that also mean that the almajaris, who are fighting in some parts of the country, are also members of the Buhari political
family? No ! You cannot say that they are part of his family.

“In as much as he is the political leader of Kwara State, everybody can be part of the political
structure.”

Offa Bank Robbery: I’m Innocent, Saraki Responds To Police |The Republican News

Bukola-Saraki

Fred Itua, Abuja

Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has officially responded to the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), over an alleged link to some suspects arrested in the April Offa bank robbery.

Some of the armed robbers claimed they were Saraki’s political thugs.

Daily Sun exclusively gathered that Saraki “submitted his response to the police around 3:00pm, yesterday.”
In a one-paragraph message posted on his official Facebook page and Twitter handle, Saraki said his response was to aid the police in its ongoing investigations into the robbery attack.

He wrote: “In line with their request, earlier today (yesterday), the police received my response to the letter on the investigation into the Offa robbery case.”

Saraki’s media aide, Yusuf Olaniyonu, however, declined entreaties to reveal the content of the letter when Daily Sun contacted him.

“When the police wrote to the Senate President, they didn’t reveal the content of their letter. I can’t tell you what the Senate President has written. You can find out from police people,” Olaniyonu fired back.

Regardless, sources in Saraki’s office told Daily Sun that the Senate president denied any involvement with the arrested suspects. He also reportedly came hard on the NPF leadership for attempting to drag his name in the mud.
It was further gathered that the Senate president promised to make himself available whenever he is summoned, to provide additional information.

On Monday, the police asked Saraki to respond, in writing, to the allegations from the armed robbers, within 48 hours.
Swiftly, Saraki responded on his official social media pages that he would comply with the within 48 hours deadline.
He had earlier instructed his aide to get an invitation letter from the police after he was declared wanted after the armed robbers claimed they were his political thugs.

Following the invitation last Sunday, Saraki claimed that the allegations raised against him were concocted. He called on the public to disregard the allegations.
The Senate president described his perceived intimidation as a threat to democracy.    (The Sun)

Offa Bank Robbery: Saraki Must Face Panel – Police |The Republican News

Bukola-Saraki1

Senate President, Bukola Saraki

Molly Kilete, Abuja

The Police Force Headquarters in Abuja has said that the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, is still under investigation in connection with the Offa bank robbery. The police said this after a recent disclosure and confessional statement by some of the suspects arrested for the robbery, who are presently in police custody.

The police also said that two more suspects have been arrested in connection with the robbery, while another was still on the run. This is even as the police have vowed that it would do everything possible within its power to ensure that justice is done.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood, made this known while parading five of the major suspects. Jimoh said: “The Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, is still under investigation in connection to the Offa bank robbery and the Nigeria police will do everything possible within the ambit of the law to ensure that justice is done in this case.

“The Nigeria Police Force will not be cowed or succumb to intimidation from any quarter in carrying out a thorough and discreet investigation into the Offa bank robbery, where significant successes have been recorded.”

The police spokesman, who maintained that the Senate President has a case to answer, as far as the Offa bank robbery is concerned, noted that some of the gang leaders accompanied Saraki to the palace of the Olofa of Offa two days after the robbery. He said that details from investigations carried out so far revealed that the five robbery suspects have direct connections with the Senate President.

“New pictures of one of the five gang leaders, when paraded by the police early in the week was in aso ebi trouser used during the Senate President’s daughter’s wedding. The five gang leaders further admitted that they attended the Senate President’s daughter’s wedding held recently,” he said.  (The Sun)

Bank Robbery, Kwara Killings: Saraki, Gov. Ahmed Gave Us Firearms, Money Vehicles – Suspects

By Emmanuel Onani

Kwara killings, bank robbery: Saraki, gov gave us firearms, money, vehicles – Suspects
  • Senate President, Ahmed: Allegations baseless
  • Police summon Saraki
  • DSS withdraws 11 operatives attached to Senate President
  • Ahmed’s Chief of Staff, Personal Assistant arrested
  • Revolver pistol, pump action gun recovered from gov’s aide

Five suspects arrested in connection with the April 5th bank robbery in Offa, Kwara State and killing of 30 persons in the state have confessed to their alleged links with Senate President Bukola Saraki and Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed.

During the investigation, the police stated that the five gang leaders allegedly admitted and confessed that they “have been sponsored with firearms, money and operational vehicles” by Saraki and Ahmed.

The suspects, who were arrested in the wake of the robbery incident, had made confessional statements alleging that they were political thugs of the Senate President. Parading the five suspects and eight others yesterday in Abuja, Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), ACP Jimoh Moshood, said the suspects operated under the name of Youth Liberation Movement (a.k.a Good Boys).

To buttress their case against the Kwara State Governor, the Police noted the separate apprehension of Messrs Alabi Olalekan and Yusuf Abdulwahab, Personal Assistant (Political), Chief of Staff to the Governor, respectively.

Consequently, Saraki has been invited to report at the Force Intelligence Response Team’s Office in Abuja, “to answer to the allegations levelled against him from the confessions of the five gang leaders.”

The police gave the names of the suspected political thugs, who were said to be the gang leaders of the bank robbery, as follows: Ayoade Akinnibosun, Ibukunle Ogunleye, Adeola Abraham, Salawudeen Azeez, and Niyi Ogundiran.

The quintet was among eight other suspects paraded at the Force Headquarters, yesterday, over the robbery incident, which claimed 33 lives, including pregnant women and nine police officers. According to Moshood, “The five gang leaders confessed and volunteered statements to the Police investigators, giving a clear account of how they planned and carried out the bank’s robbery operation in Offa, the attack on the Police Division in Offa and how they killed the 33 innocent persons during the robbery.

“The five gang leaders further confessed during the investigation that they are political thugs under the name Youth Liberation Movement, a.k.a “Good Boys”.

They admitted and confessed to having been sponsored with firearms, money and operational vehicles by the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki and the Governor of Kwara State, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed.”

He further alleged that a Lexus Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) with a sticker bearing “Saraki” was used for the robbery incident. “In the course of discreet investigation into the confessions of these five gang leaders and the other 17 principal suspects, a Lexus jeep GX-300 (Ash Colour) with a sticker plate number with inscription “SARAKI” “Kwara, State of Harmony” used by the gang leader (Ayoade Akinnibosun ‘M’ 37Yrs) during the bank robbery and the killing of the 33 innocent persons was taken to Government House, Ilorin on 16th May, 2018 where the sticker plate number with inscription “SARAKI” “Kwara, the State of Harmony” was removed before another plate number (Reg. No. Kwara, KMA 143 RM) registered in the name of Ayoade Akinnibosun, the overall commander of the Offa bank robbery was then attached to the vehicle to cover up the identity of the said vehicle.

“The exhibit vehicle was subsequently recovered from the premises of the Ministry of Environmental and Forestry in Ilorin, Kwara State. While the sticker plate number with inscription “SARAKI” “Kwara, State of Harmony” removed from the vehicle was recovered from one Adeola Omiyale who drove the said Lexus Jeep to Government House, Ilorin immediately after the bank robbery,” the police said. This was as the Police said two guns were recovered from one of Governor Ahmed’s aides in custody.

The police: “The Personal Assistant (Political) to the Executive Governor of Kwara State, Mr. Alabi Olalekan, who is privy to information that the Police are looking for the Lexus Jeep as an exhibit used in the Offa bank robbery and the killings of 33 innocent persons directed one Adeola Omiyale to relocate the Lexus Jeep to Government House, Ilorin.

“The PA (Political) is currently in Police custody and has made useful statement assisting the Police in further investigation into the case. A revolver pistol and pump action gun were recovered by the Police Investigation Team from the Personal Assistant (Political) to the Governor of Kwara State, Mr Alabi Olalekan’s farm where he directed his brother to hide them after his arrest by the Police.

“In order to conceal evidence, the Chief of Staff to the Governor of Kwara State, Mr. Yusuf Abdulwa-hab, who has been arrested and taken into Police custody, arranged the removal of the sticker plate number with inscription “SARAKI” “Kwara, State of Harmony” from the exhibit vehicle and also registered the exhibit Lexus Jeep used in the Offa bank robbery and the killings of 33 innocent persons in the name of Ayoade Akinnibosun, the overall Gang Commander of the Offa bank robbery while the Ayoade Akinnibosun was already in Police custody for more than six days before the registration of the vehicle.” While noting that efforts to arrest other suspects were ongoing, the police said they will continue to carry out their constitutionally- guaranteed duties, with a view to enthroning a peaceful and orderly society.

“The investigation into the Offa bank robbery and gruesome killings of more than 33 innocent persons in Offa, Kwara State on the 5th April 2018 directed by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris, has made significant progress, successes and more revelations have been recorded.

“The gang leaders and some of the principal suspects arrested for their active participation in the robbery and the killing of innocent persons have made confessional statements admitting to the various criminal roles they and their sponsors played in this dastard and heinous crime.

“The five gang leaders and some of the other 17 suspects arrested for direct involvement and active participation in the Offa bank robbery and the gruesome killing of 33 innocent persons which includes (some pregnant women and nine Police personnel) admitted, confessed and volunteered statements that they were political thugs of the Senate President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Bukola Saraki and the Governor of Kwara State, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed,” the Police said.

The Force further noted that the arrest of the “political thugs”, and others, was facilitated by the earlier confessions made by two principal suspects – Kunle Ogunleye and Michael Adikwu.

“The arrests of the above mentioned five gang leaders and 17 others were made possible after the arrest of two principal suspects (Kunle Ogunleye, aka Arrow, 35yrs and Michael Adikwu an ex-convict) whose pictures captured by CCTV in one of the banks during the banks’ robbery were circulated to the media and the public.

“The two principal suspects confessed to being among the suspects led by the five gang leaders listed above to carry out the Offa banks robbery, the attack on the Divisional Police Headquarters, Offa and the killings of 33 innocent persons on the 5th of April, 2018,” the police said.

Meanwhile, the police disclosed that a total of 21 AK-47 rifles, which were carted from the Armoury of Offa Police Divisional Headquarters, had yet to be recovered.

The following exhibits, according to the police, were recovered from the suspects: Two AK-47 rifles, two barrette pistols, one pump action rifle and one revolver pistol.

Vehicles in Police custody in Ilorin are Lexus RX300 Jeep with Reg. No. Kwara, KMA 143 RM belonging to Ayoade Akinnibosun (gang leader) – used for the bank robbery; Mercedes Benz – Compressor with Reg. No. Lagos LT496 KJA belonging to Ayoade Akinnibosun (gang leader) – used for the bank robbery, and one Toyota Prado Jeep with Reg. Nigeria Police Invite Senate President For Questioning Over Armed Robberies |RN

By Camillus Eboh
BukolaSaraki

ABUJA (Reuters) – Nigerian police on Sunday said the president of the upper house of parliament had been invited for questioning over allegations that he financed a criminal gang that carried out a spate of armed robberies and killed 33 people including pregnant women.

Bukola Saraki’s three-year tenure as Senate president has been marred by numerous accusations of misconduct and investigations, though he has consistently stated that he is innocent and none have led to convictions.

The Nigeria Police Force issued an emailed statement in which it gave details of an investigation into six armed robberies at banks in Offa, a city in the central state of Kwara, in April 2018. An attack on the city’s police headquarters during the wave of attacks was part of the probe.

It said 22 suspects were in police custody and confessions had been secured by some in which they claimed to have been “sponsored with firearms, money and operational vehicles by the Senate president”.

“Senate President, Sen. Bukola Saraki is being invited to report to the police to answer allegations indicting him from confessions of five gang leaders arrested for active participation in Offa bank robbery and killings of thirty-three innocent persons,” the Nigeria Police Force statement said.

It said Saraki – Nigeria’s third most senior politician – had been invited to report to the Force Intelligence Response Team office in the capital, Abuja, to answer to the allegations.

A spokesman for Saraki declined to comment but said a statement would be issued in due course.

Saraki ran unopposed for the post of Senate president in 2015, mainly with the backing of the opposition. He was not the ruling party’s preferred candidate, which led to strains in his relationship with President Muhammadu Buhari.

A faction of the president’s All Progressives Congress party with close ties to Saraki last month issued a public letter stating that many of its members felt ostracized just months before a presidential election in February 2019 which Buhari says he plans to contest.

The allegations are the latest to be levelled against Saraki since he took office.

Nigeria’s court of appeal, in December 2017, dismissed 15 charges against him relating to allegations that he falsely declared his assets when he was Kwara state governor from 2003 to 2011, to which he pleaded not guilty.

Last year lawmakers cleared Saraki of any wrongdoing over allegations that he attempted to evade payment of customs duties on a car and in October 2016 he was cleared of altering Senate rules to get himself elected.  (Peoples loves Toronto)
