IPOB Remains Terrorist Group, Despite EU, US Stance, Says Buhari’s Aide |RN

                                                             IPOB members

Ade Adesomoju, Abuja

Special Adviser to the President on Prosecution, Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, has described as inconsequential the recognition accorded the Indigenous People of Biafra by some foreign nations as a non-terrorist group, despite Nigeria’s recent proscription and designation of the group as a terrorist organisation.‎

Obono-Obla also disclosed that the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami(SAN), would soon charge the promoters and members of the proscribed group for allegedly operating illegally in Nigeria in violation of Section 54 of the Companies and Allied Matters Act.

He maintained in a statement which he released late on Sunday that IPOB’s activities qualified it as a terrorist group as defined by the provisions of the Terrorism (Prevention) Act 2013.

The presidential aide said by its advocacy and modus of operation, IPOB terrorised, harassed or intimidated “those who do not subscribe it to its separatist’s ideology and ethnic bigotry before its proscription”.

He added, “So it is a terrorist organisation! This is also an organisation that was hounding and killing Nigerians in Rivers and Abia States before the military intervention!

“This is a group that was burning police stations; killing police officers, throwing bombs at military convoys, threatening to make the country ungovernable, threatening to stop governorship election in Anambra State!

“Most importantly a court of competent jurisdiction -Federal High Court has presided over by the Acting Chief Judge, Justice Abdul Kafarati upon an application filed by the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation hinged on Section 2 (1) (a) & (b) of the Terrorism (Prevention) Act granted an order proscribing IPOB! So whether EU or United States of Nigeria or any foreign country says about IPOB is immaterial, irrelevant and of no moment!”

He insisted that the designation of IPOB as a terrorist group with the backing of a court order proscribing it last week was Nigeria’s domestic affair, which foreign nations should not meddle in.

With particular reference to the European Union and the United States of America, Obono-Obla said meddling in Nigeria’s internal affair could erode the nation’s sovereignty.

He said, “I have previously said that the international community should not meddle in our internal affairs because doing that will amount to an erosion of our sovereignty!

“The EU has no business absolutely and totally with our internal matters so if EU says it does not see IPOB as a terrorist group, it does not matter as far as Nigeria is concerned.

“It is inconsequential! We all know by the definition of a terrorist organisation within the meaning of the term as defined by the provisions of the Terrorism (Prevention) Act, IPOB is a terrorist organisation! Also it by its advocacy and modus of operation it is a terrorist organisation! It used to terrorise, harassing or intimidating those who do not subscribe it to its separatist’s ideology and ethnic bigotry before its proscription so it is a terrorist organisation!

“I want to add that the USA may say IPOB is not a terrorist organisation by US Law because it is a registered business concern in the State of California in the United States!

“However by Nigerian law a foreign company which is not registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission by the provisions of Section 53 of the Companies and Allied Matters Act 2004 is illegal.

“And by Section 54 of the Companies and Allied Matters Act, it is a criminal offence for a foreign company to operate in Nigeria without registration! So all this while IPOB was operating in Nigeria illegally!”   (Punch)

Biafra Designed To Be Realised Without Bullets – Uwazuruike |The Republican News

BIM Leader, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike

From David Onwuchekwa, Nnewi

Leader of Biafra Independence Movement and founder of the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (BIM-MASSOB), Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, yesterday, disclosed that his organization was the first in the continent to adopt the non-violent approach in the struggle for independence, assuring that BIM-MASSOB would continue to be a role model for groups seeking self-determination without resorting to violence.

Uwazuruike noted that the struggle for new Biafra should not be handled in a manner similar to a coup, adding that the decision to adopt a non-violent approach to actualising self-determination was in the interest of Biafran people, and should not be seen as an act of cowardice.

“We are not violent because we know that is the only right way through which we can actualize Biafra. I challenge the critics of non-violent approach particularly Mr Nnamdi Kanu-led Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to mention one country that achieved independence through violence,” Uwazuruike submitted.

Uwazuruike who spoke through the movement’s Director of Information, Mazi Chris Mocha further explained that in his careful planning of MASSOB in 1999 through non-violence, he envisaged that he would actualise Biafra without a single bullet fired, no life would be lost and no exodus involved.

He said that no single nation had ever achieved independence through violence and challenged anyone that had an example to mention just one nation that achieved independence through a violent process.

He explained that he spent the time to educate his members on the philosophy of non-violence since the moment violence became admissible the whole objective set out by BIM-MASSOB would be defeated.

He, however, disclosed that on several occasions the federal government had wanted BIM-MASSOB to adopt violence so that it could find enough excuse to crush the new Biafra struggle and to brand it a terrorist group before the international community “but we have always resisted that as mature agitators.”  (The Sun)

Killer Herdsmen Not Terrorists: Garba Shehu Angers, Ekiti, Benue, MASSOB |RN

Fulani Herdsman

Ekiti, Benue, MASSOB slam presidential aide

By Adetutu Folasade-Koyi, Wole Balogun, Ekiti, Jeff Amechi Agbodo, Onitsha  and Rose Ejembi, Makurdi

President Muhammadu Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, declared during a programme on national television, yesterday, that killer herdsmen are not terrorists.

He described them as “criminal gangs.”

There have been clashes between Fulani herdsmen and farmers across the country. Clashes between herdsmen and local communities, in Benue, Plateau, Taraba, Nasarawa, Ekiti, Ondo, Delta, Edo, Kaduna states, among others.

Ekiti, Benue, Taraba states have enacted anti-grazing laws. In these states, herdsmen have rejected the law and vowed to challenge them in court.

Regardless, Shehu reiterated on Channels, yesterday, that the federal government did not declare herdsmen as terrorists because they are “only criminal gangs” and quickly added that security agencies are dealing with them, according to the law.

“There is a difference between a criminal gang, criminal activity and a terrorist activity; and, I think from the definition we are getting, yes, Fulani herdsmen are a criminal gang and they are being dealt with according to the law of the country.

“But, IPOB, like Boko Haram, has a territory they have carved out for themselves, as a sovereign state of their own. They have shown the willingness to invade neighbouring states. They have raised concerns in neighbouring Kogi and Benue states. They have said they are interested in taking over Bayelsa and Rivers…IPOB is a small group of people running

“That is exactly what Boko Haram has done; with a flag and taxation system. This is not acceptable to the law of this country.”

Last Friday, the Defence Headquarters declared IPOB a “militant terrorist” organisation.

South East governors followed suit and proscribed the group’s activities, after a marathon meeting.

On Wednesday, a Federal High Court, in Abuja, granted government’s prayer and granted an interlocutory injunction to outlaw the group as a terrorist organisation.

Asked whether the government knows the IPOB leader’s whereabouts, Shehu replied that the enquiries should be directed, instead, at those who signed his bail in April.

Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Kanu’s counsel,  had alleged that his client is missing, after security agents allegedly stormed his home in Umuahia, on September 14, 2017.

“I am surprised someone would ask this question. Look, some people went to court and obtained his freedom, they signed his bail. I believe that a high profile group including a Senator of the Federal Republic signed in a court of law and obtained his freedom.

“So, if you are looking for him, why don’t you ask the people who bailed him? Nobody has informed me that Mr Kanu is in the hands of any institution of government. But, if I were looking for him, I would ask the guy who bailed him because that was the deal he had with the court of the land,” said Garba.

When Daily Sun contacted Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, to react to Shehu’s comments, he said the government was just being selective on who to label as terrorist.

“It is very clear that they are the one who determines who is corrupt and who is not corrupt. When Fulani herdsmen sack communities in broad daylight, like it happened in Benue and Plateau, they carry AK 47, maim and destroy people. What do we call them if not terrorists?

“If the government of the day says the herdsmen are not terrorists, we leave them to continue to be selective.

“The destruction that the herdsmen have wreaked on the soil of Nigeria is a far cry from the mere agitation and peaceful protests IPOB have carried out and yet, government proscribed IPOB.”

On his part, Chief Press Secretary to Benue Governor, Samuel Ortom, Terver Akase, insisted that what the herdsmen had done in the state amounted to acts of terrorism.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Sun in Makurdi, yesterday, Akase, who noted that unlawfully taking the lives of innocent people was not permitted anywhere in the world, maintained that such action is nothing but terrorism. “It is difficult to describe who is a terrorist and who is not but, what we do know is that whoever carries weapons to invade a community or a town and kill innocent people, if such person is not a terrorist, what he is doing amounts to an act of terrorism, because terrorism also seeks to destroy…That person may not be a terrorist but that act is an act of terrorism which herdsmen have been carrying out in Benue state,” the CPS said.

IPOB Media and Publicity Secretary, Mr Emma Powerful, dismissed Shehu’s comments and insisted that the group has the right to agitate for an independent state of Biafra.

“IPOB is fighting for our right, which is permitted by the law of the United Nations and are terrorists for being peaceful and harmless

“Fulani herdsmen are recognised as the fourth, deadliest terrorist group in the whole world. We maintain our non-violent approach, towards the restoration of Biafra.”

To the leader of the Movement for Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Mr Uchenna Madu, Shehu’s comments “has proved an earlier exposition that armed Fulani herdsmen, causing violent havoc in Christian-dominated regions are Hausa Fulani jihadist foot soldiers.

“We still insist that IPOB is not a terrorist organisation.”   (The Sun)

Take Your Python Dance To Boko Haram, Fulani Herdsmen, BIM Tells FG |RN

From Aloysius Attah, Onitsha

The Ralph Uwazuruike faction of the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra, (MASSOB) otherwise called Biafra Independent Movement, BIM, has advised the federal government against the deployment of soldiers to the South East.

The group advised the government to rather invest their military exploits in pushing back and defeating Boko Haram and stopping the killer herdsmen that terrorize most states of the south of Nigeria. The Nnewi South Regional Administrator of BIM, Chief Anthony Nwodo, said the Operation Python Dance in the east has an ulterior motive of extermination of the Igbo nation by the government of President Muhammadu Buhari. “It is because of the Biafra agitation that Operation Python Dance was sent to us.

There is no ethnic group without crisis. They should withdraw the python now. It was not launched in Boko Haram controlled Areas or in states where herdsmen attack residents and farmers and the armed robbers/kidnappers infested Kaduna/Abuja highway.”

“What happens in the north is worse than IPOB activities here in the south, yet they did not think it appropriate to send their coward soldiers who fled to Cameroun and other neighbouring nations when they were attacked by Boko Haram insurgents.”

“Let them come to us on intelligence advice on how to subdue criminals instead of pretending to be crime fighters when they are cowards,” Nwodo fumed.

In his contribution, the Anambra Central zonal leader, Emmanuel Omenka, said, “we are not violent and we are not afraid of attack or arrest and that was why we did not attack IPOB members when they attacked us in Onitsha during the celebration of 18 years of MASSOB existence”  (The Sun)

MASSOB Warns SE Gov’s Against Anti-Biafra Actions, Warns Against Arrest Of Kanu |RN

The Movement for Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), under the leadership of Mr Uchenna Madu, has warned South East governors against any step that would undermine the struggle for the actualisation of a sovereign state of Biafra. The group gave the warning after its meeting in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital, with some of its national officers. Ebonyi State Coordinator of MASSOB, Ikenna Kalu, who read out a communiqué signed by himself and all local government coordinators of the state, said any governor in the South East who was not supporting Biafra agitation was an enemy of the Igbo. The communiqué partly read: “We are determined to actualize Biafra through
non-violence since we don’t have guns or any weapon. We insist on absolute freedom of Biafra because not even Igbo presidency or restructuring will stop us from agitating for Biafra because that is where we come from.
We are warning Igbo governors to be careful and avoid any step that is against Biafra. They should be careful of any step that is against Biafra freedom. Igbo are suffering, we are in bondage. So, anybody that is not with us is against us. South East Governors should be careful with any step that is against Biafra freedom. No amount of Uwazuruike’s BIM will stop us or even their cheap black mail that will stop us from actualizing Biafra. Our meeting with Ohanaeze Ndigbo was not for any political interest but for the overall interest of the Igbo.
On the planned arrest of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, by the federal government, the group vowed that it will resist it with its last blood.
We will fight, we will resist with even our last blood if they attempt to arrest Nnamdi Kanu again. We want to remind Nigerians that they are sitting on a time bomb. it said.

MASSOB Lauds South-East Governors, Ohanaeze Meeting With Nnamdi Kanu |RN

From Jeff AmechiAgbodo, Onitsha

The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) under the leadership of comrade Uchenna Madu yesterday commended South-East governors and leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo for meeting with the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, describing it as a new beginning for Ndigbo.

The National Director of Information, Edeson Samuel, in a statement, said that it was a welcome development and a new beginning for Ndigbo because according him ‘united we stand and divided we achieve nothing”. The group stressed that it would no longer accept any insult on the Igbo leaders, saying ‘we cannot allow our fathers to be insulted by these Hausa/Fulanis that have no generational value.’

MASSOB also condemned the attack on President of Ohaneze Dr Nnia Nwodo by Arewa group and Chief Ralph Uwazuruike”. The statement read in part: “It is on record that Raph Uwazuruike was expelled from MASSOB on 30th November 2015. It was published in national dailies e.g, The Nation newspaper of Tuesday, Dec 2015 front and page 43 entitled ‘MASSOB sack Uwazuruike”.

Uwazuruike is frustrated. This is the character of a drowning man. He will always look for an excuse to justify his negative action”.

“For Raph Uwazuruike and BIM saying that they do not recognize Ohanaeze Ndigbo and its leadership is laughable and should be disregarded because they have nothing to offer Ndigbo. Raph Uwazuruike is BIM leader. We are not contesting that.

So, he should not be addressed as MASSOB leader because he remains expelled”.

“The leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo did not invite Uwazuruike because they know the real Biafra agitators.”       (The Sun)

MASSOB Threatens Showdown Over Detained Members |The Republican News

Image result for MASSOB

From Aloysius Attah, Onitsha

Members of the Chief Ralph Uwazurike-led Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB and Biafra Independent Movement, BIM, yesterday threatened to occupy the streets of Anambra indefinitely over the continued incarceration of their members in prison for the past four years.

MASSOB-BIM Leader for Anambra South, Chief Arinze Igbani and the Acting Regional Administrator for Awka South, Sunday Ozoilo, in a joint press briefing in Onitsha accused some judges in Anambra State of constituting a clog in the wheel of freedom for their detained members.

Citing the case of four of their members, Chukwuemeka Arua, ThankGod Mark, Chidi Nweke and Emmanuel Akachukwu, who have been languishing in prison custody since 2013, after they were arrested in connection with the MASSOB sit-at-home order, Igbani and Ozoilo noted that the four were granted bail at Ogidi High Court on June 14, 2017, but the presiding judge was unable to sign the bail documents before proceeding on annual vacation. The MASSOB-BIM leaders who presented the court documents to authenticate their claims noted that the judge who had earlier chided the police for not filing any proof of evidence for armed robbery and conspiracy against the accused for the past four years, later turned around to insist on confirming the authenticity of land documents tendered by their sureties from the Ministry of Lands before allowing the detainees to breath the air of freedom.

They called on the National Judicial Council, Federal and State governments, including various human rights bodies both local and international to come to their aid before they are provoked into violence.

The Biafra agitation group also disclosed that 12 of their members are also struggling to free themselves from various spurious charges brought against them because of their struggle for Biafran independence in various courts in Onitsha, Atani, Otuocha and Nteje, noting that 18 years after their continuous agitations for Biafra, they can never be cowed into submission by various state agents. “Our members were arrested by Special Anti Robbery Squad and after severe torture and other dehumanizing treatment, they were charged to court and remanded in prison custody.

Those cases have lingered while most wives and children of our members have been living like widows and the fatherless.

The hopes of the four families to reunite again with their breadwinners were dashed last month because of the insistence of that judge who is an Igbo woman.

The implication is that they will still remain in custody till after vacation in September. Our patience is running out,” they lamented. (The Sun)

MASSOB Opens Voice Of Biafra Radio In Germany This Week |The Republican News

Image result for Radio Biafra

From: David Onwuchekwa, Nnewi

If the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) is to be believed, a new Radio Biafra, the Voice of Biafra International (VOBI), will be opened in far-away Germany this week. The radio would broadcast on short waves (SW) band, this week.

This was contained in a statement issued and signed by Biafra Director of Information, Mazi Chris Mocha.

Meanwhile the Leader of Biafra Independence  Movement (BIM), Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, on Sunday in Ojukwu Memories Library, New Owerri, Imo State  Capital, listed some activities lined up to mark the 18 years of the founding of the movement for the actualisation of a sovereign state of Biafra (MASSOB).

Uwazuruike said the celebration in Onitsha, Anambra State on September 13, would be part of activities lined up for the 18 years of non-violence and non-exodus by MASSOB.

The MASSOB leader added that the Radio station would be the authentic voice of the Biafran people and would always educate, inform and enlighten our people on issues of Biafra and not to spread hate messages or blackmail.

He maintained that MASSOB-BIM would continue to play a leading role in our quest for Biafra, assuring Ndigbo that it is only through Non-Violence that could lead them to Biafra independence without firing a gunshot.

On Anambra State governorship election, on November 18, Chief Uwazuruike insisted that the election must hold as planned, adding that MASSOB was not interested in any political party.

“When there is no election the constitution is very clear on this.  And what do you get in return, a military administrator will be appointed in Anambra State to the detriment of Ndigbo,” he argued?

He said the group had no regret that Radio Biafra London was set up in 2009 by Chief Ralph Uwazuruike and handed over to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu only for the same Radio to be used to blackmail its leader and spread hate massages, saying that Kanu was only out to make money and fame and not firm and credible to propagate the Biafra struggle.        (The Sun)

MASSOB Insists On Breakup As Igbo Leaders Support Restructured United Nigeria

•S’East govs, others plan panel to discuss with FG

Ihuoma Chiedozie, Enugu

State governors and members of the National Assembly from the South-East; the leadership of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo; traditional and religious leaders and other leaders of thought from the zone ended their meeting in Enugu on Sunday with a declaration that Ndigbo were for a “united Nigeria.”

A communique issued at the meeting, read by the Chairman of the South-East Governors Forum, Ebonyi State governor, Dave Umahi, stated that the Igbo leaders concluded that the Igbo were in “full support” of a united Nigeria.

The South-East stakeholders’ meeting, which held at Nike Lake Resort in Enugu, commenced on Saturday night and ended in the early hours of Sunday.

The regional leaders also called on the Federal Government to start the process of restructuring the country without delay.

Our correspondent learnt that issues surrounding the agitation for Biafra, including the three-month ultimatum to quit, given to Igbo in the northern part of the country by some youth groups, informed the decision to convene the meeting.

The governors of the five South-East states were in attendance as well as all the National Assembly members from the zone, led by the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, and the Chairman of South-East Caucus of the National Assembly, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe.

The leadership of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, led by the President-General, Chief Nnia Nwodo, was also at the meeting.

The Igbo leaders, in the same vein, insisted on the restructuring of the country and asked the Federal Government to begin the process of actualising the restructuring of the nation within a reasonable time frame.

They also demanded the implementation of the recommendations of the 2014 national conference.

Part of the communique read, “Ndigbo are in full support of a united Nigeria, where peace, love, fairness, justice, equity and equality of opportunities are paramount, regardless of creed, ethnicity, gender or political affiliation.

“We condemn all hate speeches and misconduct from any segment of the country.

“Igbo leaders lend their full support to the restructuring of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the platform of fairness and equity.

“We, therefore, call on the Federal Government and all Nigerian leaders to commence a process of dialogue among Nigerians on the modalities of achieving this pressing question within a reasonable time frame.

“Ndigbo supports the report of the National Conference of 2014 and we urge the Federal Government to set up structures that will enable the implementation of the same within a reasonable time.”

The Igbo leaders at the meeting also resolved to “constitute official organ” that would, henceforth, speak on behalf of the Igbo.

“The South-East governors, members of the National Assembly, leadership from the South-East and the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo shall henceforth constitute the official organs that shall speak on behalf of the Ndigbo.

“South-East leaders, in consultation with other parts of the country, will set up a committee to engage the Federal Government on all issues that concern Ndigbo,” the communique added.

In the same vein, the Igbo leaders stated that they were taking steps to ensure the safety of the lives and property of the Igbo in all parts of Nigeria.

They also guaranteed the safety of lives and property of all Nigerians living in the South-East.

Religious and traditional leaders at the meeting include the Catholic Bishop of Nsukka Diocese, Prof. Godfrey Onah; the Enugu Archbishop of the Anglican Communion, Dr  Emmanuel Chukwuma; and Chairman, South-East Traditional Rulers Council/Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe.

Others at the meeting are a former Senate President, Ken Nnamani; a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo; a former Governor of Ebonyi State, Senator Sam Egwu; National Chairman, United Progressive Party, Chief Chekwas Okorie; a former power minister, Prof. Barth Nnaji; a former Chief of General Staff, Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe (retd.), and a former Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs. Josephine Anenih.

MASSOB accuses Igbo leaders of betrayal

MASSOB leader, Comrade Uchenna Madu, who spoke for the secessionist group, described the decisions reached at the Enugu meeting as “insensitive.”

He stressed that the outcome of the meeting would not derail the struggle for the realisation of Biafra, saying the position of the leaders could only postpone the “inevitable.”

Madu stated, “The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra berates Igbo religious, traditional, political and opinion leaders for their nonchalant and insensitive attitude towards the current agitation for Biafra.

“Why is it that whenever these self-acclaimed Igbo leaders meet among themselves or with the Nigerian Presidency, they always sideline the primary and principal reasons and cause of the Biafra agitation?

“Yesterday’s meeting of Igbo leaders in Enugu is tactically helping the Nigerian government in postponing the explosion of the inevitable and unstoppable ticking time bomb which Nigeria is comfortably sitting on.

“Their decisions are not the true minds and positions of the people of Biafra – we want Biafra and nothing but Biafra.

“Nigeria must disintegrate; her faulty foundation has broken beyond repair.

“Majority of Igbo leaders have brazenly betrayed Igbo cause and interests in Nigeria.

“We wish to inform Ndigbo that the reawakening of the spirit and consciousness of Biafra among the people can never be demoralised again – the Biafra revolutionary struggle can no longer be betrayed by personal or group interests.”

The MASSOB leader expressed regrets that the Igbo elite, who, according to him, had gained a lot from the pro-Biafra agitation, did not appreciate the activists.

“In this struggle, numerous sacrifices have been made, supreme prices have been paid.

“We have been tortured, mesmerised, killed and incarcerated for the sake of Biafra and the glory of Ndigbo, yet we are neglected, abused and abandoned by people who benefit from our exploits,” he said.      (

BIAFRA: South East, South South Shut Down |The Republican News

Residents obey sit-at-home order; banks, markets, schools closed

By Our Reporters

Yesterday’s sit-at-home order by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in commemoration of the 50 years anniversary of the declaration of the state of Biafra recorded huge success in virtually all the South East states and in some parts of South-South.

Our correspondents reported that commercial activities were paralysed in major cities in Abia, Anambra, Imo, Enugu and Bayelsa states. However, the sit-at-home order was said to have recorded partial compliance in Ebonyi State.

In Onitsha, the commercial hub of Anambra State,  there was no human and vehicular movements as markets, schools, banks, parks and filling stations were closed as residents and traders remained indoors in total compliance with the sit-at-home order.

However, police helicopter kept hovering in the air within the city of Onitsha while Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC) were stationed at strategic places at Bridgehead, Nkpor Junction and (Dennis Memorial Grammar School) DMGS Junction to ensure there was no breakdown of law and order during the exercise.

Some residents, traders and members of IPOB gathered, singing and chanting solidarity songs to the admiration of observers and foreign media who spoke with some of them.

Kanu weeps at Nkpor

On Sunday night, leader of IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, broke down and wept at Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government, Area, Anambra State when he visited St. Edmund’s Catholic Church/Primary School where hundreds of Biafrans were allegedly murdered by Nigerian military and security operatives on May 30, 2016.

Kanu arrived the site at about 5:30pm and prayed to God Almighty (Chukwu Okike Abiama) for their souls to keep on fighting for the restoration of Biafra, which was the main reason they lost their lives.

Yesterday, the popular and ever busy Upper Iweka looked like a ghost town while major roads in Onitsha were virtually deserted.

In Imo State, there was  total paralysis of commercial activities in Owerri, state capital, as major markets, schools, commercial banks and shopping malls shut their doors to customers in compliance with the sit-at-home order by IPOB.

Similarly, there was no vehicular movement, as major roads of Owerri like Bank, Tetlow, MCC, Okigwe and Douglas roads were deserted. Few passengers  who were on transit were stranded. Owerri residents complied with the order as they remained indoors while major markets, including Ekeukwu along Douglas road and Relief  along Egbu road, Shoprite, Everyday Super markets, commercial banks, schools and motor parks were shut down.

Mrs. Oluchi Uchenwa said she arrived Owerri as early as 7:00am to travel to Port Harcourt, but could not get a vehicle due to the sit-at-home order by IPOB.

At the state secretariat, some of the civil servants who reported to work said they did so because of the threat of sack from the state government.

In Umuahia, Abia State capital, there was compliance to the order from morning till about noon, before vehicular and human movements started gradually.

Most of the shops, offices and markets did not open for business as usual as only few people were seen moving  about.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Leye Oyebade, was seen patrolling Umuahia with an entourage of about seven vehicles, apparently to forestall possible breakdown of law and order.

The management of private schools in the city had sent text messages to their students not to come to school yesterday in order not to attract the wrath of the Biafra agitators.

Banks did not open for business until about 12noon when customers were admitted through back doors. Shops were half open for those who could risk it.

Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State, was literally shut down yesterday as economic and business activities were totally paralysed.

Major markets, including Ariaria, Cemetery, Ahia Ohuru (New Market), Shopping Centre, Asa Nnetu Spare parts market and Ehere, among others were all closed.

Government offices in Aba north, Aba south, Osisioma and Obingwa Local Government headquarters were all closed as workers stayed at home, while there was no life in several motor parks across the city in total compliance of the sit-at-home order.

In Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital and its environs, business activities were paralysed yesterday following the order.

Daily Sun checks showed all  business outfits and locations owned by Igbo traders and supporters of Biafra struggle were not opened,  even at the time of filing the report.

Also,  traffic jam,  which Port Harcourt is known for on major routes like Ikwerre and Aba roads disappeared. Passengers struggled to get vehicles to continue their journey.

Banks also experienced low patronage as a result of the Biafra sit-at-home order.

In Delta, some business outfits, including markets were shut yesterday in Asaba, state capital in partial compliance of the sit-at-home order.

Some of the owners of small scale business outfits and shops within the popular Ogbogonogo Market, Daily Sun gathered, decided not to open for business for fear of being molested by Biafra agitators.

However, areas considered as strongholds of Biafra settlers, including Omeligboma, Abraka, Okwe, Osadennis Way and others were completely shut as residents observed the directive issued by IPOB.

Regardless, IPOB, yesterday claimed that over 76 countries observed and participated in the peaceful march to honour Biafran fallen heroes who died during the civil war between 1967 and 1970 and otherswho died in the struggle.

The group, however, congratulated Biafrans and all IPOB family members worldwide, for their compliance with the order issued by its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

A statement by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Mr. Emma Powerful, said: “Biafrans have proven to the entire world that they need freedom and the world must know that we are not going back in the quest for independence of Biafra.”

Referendum’ll be a walk over –MASSOB

Leader of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Uchenna Madu, said the huge success recorded in yesterday’s sit-at-home call would make the coming Biafra referendum a walk over against Nigeria.

In a statement of appreciation to the people of Biafra, Madu said the success had also shown the difference between Chief Ralph Uwazurike’s Biafra Independent Movement (BIM) and other pro Biafra groups, including MASSOB and IPOB.

He said: “The huge success is an express evidence that the coming Biafra referendum shall be a walk over against Nigeria.

“It is an indication to international communities that Biafrans are ever willing to stay on their own. MASSOB is not against Nigeria’s existence; Biafra nation can as well exist as a sister nation with Nigeria like any other African country.

“The success achieved today is not a selfish pride for Nnamdi Kanu-led IPOB or Uchenna Madu-led MASSOB or any other group, it is an honour for the people of Biafra, it is an honour for the gallant and eloquent soldiers of Biafra and civilians that bravely laid down their lives for establishment of Republic of Biafra, it is an honour for Biafra school children, an honour to commercial cyclists, tricycles, buses and other vehicle operators, it is an honour to the cooperate firms/establishments that complied with the sit-at-home exercise.”

Reps warns security agents against use of maximum force

Yesterday, the House of Representatives adopted a motion, urging the military and other security agencies to refrain from using maximum force in the South East  and South South, where members of  IPOB ordered a sit-at-home yesterday.

This was sequel to a motion moved by Obinna Chidoka, under Matter of Urgent Public Importance,  at yesterday’s plenary on the need to urge security agencies  deployed to the area to exercise caution in discharging their duties.

Chidoka,  in his lead debate,  said the motion was necessary to avoid a repeat of bloodshed that occurred last year at Nkpor in Anambra State,  when security agents clashed  with residents of the area during the sit-at-home order by IPOB .

He said since that unfortunate killings, there has been tension in the South-East and South South.

Chidoka, who argued that the motion borders on the unity of the country, said it is imperative for security agencies to exercise maximum caution and discipline even in the face of provocation,   especially as yesterday  also doubled as the 50th anniversary of the declaration of the defunct Eastern  region as an independent state of Biafra.

Meanwhile, IPOB leader, Kanu has thanked Biafrans for obeying the order. He said yesterday’s event showed that the people are one in the struggle.

This was even as the director of Radio Biafra lambasted the founder of MASSOB/BIM, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, for what he described as the latter’s fruitless efforts to sabotage the order.

Speaking through his younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, from their Afara Ukwu, Umuahia base, the IPOB leader said it was heart warming to note that the sit-at-home order was obeyed beyond his imagination.

He said: “Nnamdi Kanu has sacrificed all he has for the struggle, and by compliance to the sit-at-home order, it means the people are totally in support of what he is doing, and I don’t think he will go back since he has received this type of support.”     (The Sun)
