UK Government Has Hand In Nnamdi Kanu’s Abduction In Kenya, Says Lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor |The Republican News

By Ogochukwu Anioke, Abakaliki

The British government has a hand in the alleged ‘abduction’ of leader of The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu in Nairobi, Kenya his lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor has alleged.

Mr Ejiofor made the accusation on Wednesday while speaking on Arise TV Morning Show.

He also accused the British Government and the British High Commission of not doing much to help Kanu despite being a British citizen.

Ejiofor wondered why the Commission has not visited Kanu since he was brought to Nigeria.

He noted that unlike Kanu’s 2015 arrest when the Commission was regularly visiting him while in detention, the British Commission is paying lip service to helping him this time around.

He said: “I can confirm to you that British high commission is not doing much about this case. I can confirm to you that there is every likely hood of connivance in what happened to my client.

“Because some times in 2015 when my client was arrested I know how they were keeping in constant communication with him and visiting him regularly both when he was in DSS custody and when he was transfered to prison.

“But as at yesterday a British national was arrested and till date they have not visited him even when we have officially notified them of the situation.

“As at the time he was arrested, he was arrested as a British national because he had renounced his Nigerian citizenship over 5 years ago. And they are still talking about offering him consular services”, he said

Ejiofor cautioned the media to stop describing the ordeal of his client in Kenya as an arrest arguing that it was a clear case of abduction, illegal imprisonment, torture and extraordinary rendition.

He said the manner he was taken and the manner Yoruba Activist, Sunday Igboho was arrested were completely different.

“At the time he was arrested, his associates in Nairobi started looking for him. They searched in all the Police stations and other law enforcement agencies and he was nowhere to be found.

“In the case of Sunday Igboho, he was arresteded in Benin Republic and taken to custody and is being subjected to trial. His arrest was announced but in the case of my client he was detained in an illegal facility for 8 days after which he was renditioned back to Nigeria,”he said

United Kingdom Ask Nigeria To Explain Circumstances Behind Nnamdi Kanu’s Abduction |The Republican News

IPOB leader, Maazi Nnamdi Kanu

LONDON, July 20 (Reuters) – Britain has asked Nigeria to explain where and how Nnamdi Kanu, a separatist leader who holds British citizenship, was arrested after Kanu’s lawyer alleged he had been detained and mistreated in Kenya before being sent back to Nigeria.

Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) group which wants part of southeastern Nigeria to secede, was on the run outside Nigeria for four years until he was brought to court in Abuja on June 29 and told he would face trial. read more

“We are seeking clarification from the Nigerian government about the circumstances of the arrest and detention of Nnamdi Kanu,” said Tariq Ahmad, a junior minister at Britain’s Foreign Office.

The Nigerian authorities have refused to say where Kanu was arrested, while Kenya’s ambassador to Nigeria has denied his country was involved. read more

Responding to a question about Kanu’s case from a lawmaker, Ahmad said Britain had requested consular access to Kanu and stood ready to provide consular assistance.

A spokesman for Nigeria’s Department of State Services, the security agency that is holding Kanu, could not immediately be reached for comment on Tuesday, a public holiday in Nigeria.

Kanu’s lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, alleged he was abducted by Kenya’s special police force and held for eight days before being turned over to Nigerian authorities. read more

Kanu faces 11 charges including treason, terrorism and illegal possession of firearms. His case is due to resume in court in Abuja next week.

IPOB wants a swathe of the southeast to split from Nigeria. The region attempted to secede in 1967 under the name Republic of Biafra, triggering a three-year civil war in which more than a million people died, mostly from starvation.

The Biafran enclave was reabsorbed into Nigeria after the war, but despite an official “no victor no vanquished” policy adopted at the time, discontent has continued to simmer in the region.

SaharaReporters had reported that Kanu was taken from an underground parking lot of an international airport in Kenya, while trying to “meet a person arriving in the country for a high-level IPOB meeting”.

A source privy to how Kanu was illegally kidnapped in Kenya and brought to Nigeria by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government has revealed that “it was only his Kenyan-based phone that was seized upon his arrest”.

The source said his “passport and three (major) phones plus laptop were not with him during the time he was kidnapped”.

Also according to the source, Kanu was arrested in an “Audi TT with licence plate number KCV 100 K”.

SaharaReporters also learnt that Kanu has engaged the services of a top law firm, Bindmans LLP,  to represent him in the UK.

Bindmans is an award-winning law firm based in central London with four senior consultants and 21 partners.

The senior consultants are Sir Geoffrey Bindmans QC, Stephen Grosz QC, Saimo Chahal QC, and Lynn Knowles.

SaharaReporters has consistently reported that Kanu was arrested inside a car, and not while strolling as some reports have claimed.

SaharaReporters had reported, quoting a top source, that “Kanu had arrived in Kenya and settled down in a house. On June 19, 2021, he drove himself in a car to the international airport to meet a person arriving in the country for a high-level IPOB meeting.

“He drove into the underground parking lot at the airport and was arrested before exiting the car.

“He was taken to a house and brutalised for 8 days while the Nigerian authorities perfected how to forcefully relocate him to Nigeria.

“He was travelling on a British passport, not a Nigerian passport as alleged by Malami. He was brought into Nigeria on a Saturday and arraigned on Monday.

“Buhari upon learning of his abduction decided to cancel his trip to the UK to manage the diplomatic fallouts at home instead of going to London.

“Kanu was interrogated in the presence of his lawyers in the DSS office in Abuja.

“He was taken out of Kenya without passing through immigration.”

There have been reports that INTERPOL was involved in Kanu’s arrest but the top dismissed that, saying “INTERPOL wasn’t involved”.

Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN) on Tuesday, June 29, 2021, confirmed that Kanu had been rearrested.

At a joint press briefing with the State Security Service (SSS), also known as the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja, Malami said Kanu was rearrested and returned to Nigeria on Sunday, June 27.

He did not, however, give details of where Kanu was arrested and the diplomatic collaborations that may have been involved in the operation.

According to him, the IPOB leader was arrested through “collaborative efforts of Nigerian intelligence and security services”.

Kanu, who is being prosecuted on charges of treasonable felony, was thereafter arraigned at the Federal High Court in Abuja. It was his first court appearance since he fled Nigeria in September 2017 after an invasion of his home by the military in Afara-Ukwu, near Umuahia in Abia State. (SaharaReporters)

Nnamdi Kanu’s UK Passport Still In Kenya Despite Claim Of Lawful Arrest, Extradiction By Nigeria |The Republican News

Kanu’s United Kingdom passport is still in the East African Country.

New evidence that Kenyan authorities have a hand in the arrest and extradition of Nnamdi Kanu, the Indigenous People of Biafra leader, has emerged.

Kanu’s United Kingdom passport is still in the East African Country.

A UK Newspaper, The Guardian, stated this in a report, adding that Kanu got a Kenya visa which was to expire in June, and he had been around in the country before his sudden arrest and extradition.

“Evidence seen by the Guardian shows Kanu entered Kenya this year on his British passport on a visa expiring in June. His UK passport remains in Kenya. Kanu was not in possession of a Nigerian passport, his family said, and he has verbally renounced his Nigerian citizenship in broadcasts.

“The abduction of a person from a foreign country with the aim of rendition to justice is illegal under international law,” the UK newspaper report says.

SaharaReporters had on Wednesday reported that Kanu recounted his experience in Kenya while speaking with his lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, saying he was “mercilessly beaten and tortured” in the East African country before his extradition to Nigeria.

Ejiofor had confirmed the words of Kanu during an interview, adding that Kanu told him how he was detained not in the Kenya official detention centers but in a private residence for about eight days, before his extradition to Nigeria.

The lawyer had said, “There was a clear collaboration between the Kenya government and the Nigerian government. I am happy that they now deny the fact that Kanu was arrested there.

“But by the time we finish with them at the International Criminal Court, they will never remain the same. He was arrested at the airport there, and he was taken to an unknown residence. He was subjected to inhuman treatment.

“Kanu was tortured, maltreated and mercilessly beaten, as confirmed by him to us. After spending eight days in their illegal custody, they now beckoned to the Nigerian government. Kanu was lifeless and unconscious by the time they were bringing him to Nigeria.

“To tell you the level of their conspiracy and the desperation to get him, they brought him here on a Sunday and the federal government is fully aware that I am his legal counsel.

“He was brought into the country and inflicted with several injuries and he is having many medical issues today. It was at the behest of the Federal government that Kenya was doing those things. This is against all international laws. We are going to address an international court at that level.”

The Kenyan authorities had denied that they had anything to do with the arrest and extradition of Kanu to Nigeria. (SaharaReporters)

Stop Lies Connecting Nyesom Wike, Ifeanyi Uba To Abduction Of Nnamdi Kanu —IPOB Warns |The Republican News

■Powerful, in a statement signed by himself and obtained by SaharaReporters on Monday, warned those who used his name to issue a statement which linked Uba and Wike to the betrayal of the IPOB leader to desist from such.

The media and publicity secretary of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) says he or the group has not accused Senator Ifeanyi Uba and Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike of being involved in the arrest of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Powerful, in a statement signed by himself and obtained by SaharaReporters on Monday, warned those who used his name to issue a statement which linked Uba and Wike to the betrayal of the IPOB leader to desist from such.

He reiterated that the group does not work on speculations as it does not have evidence that the two politicians were involved in the abduction of Kanu in Kenya.

IPOB spokesman, however, said the group would not hesitate to disclose it to the public if it had any proof against them, adding that those who participated in the abduction and torture of Kanu would not go scot-free.

The group said this in its reaction to a statement and video it claimed was circulating on the social media that Powerful accused Uba and Wike of being part of those who betrayed Kanu.

“The attention of global movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), ably led by our great leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has been drawn to the false and malicious press statement and audio being circulated, and purported to have been issued by our Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful.

“In the said statement, Powerful was quoted as accusing Senator Ifeanyi Uba; and Gov. Nyesom Wike of colluding with the enemies and facilitating the betrayal and abduction of our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in Kenya.

“We, therefore, wish to dissociate from the fake statement being peddled by agents of confusion. Our Publicity Secretary never at any time linked Senator Ifeanyi Uba or Governor Wike with the wicked betrayal of our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. If they were involved in the dirty deal, our investigations into the matter will reveal it.

“But for now, we have no evidence to link them with the atrocity. IPOB does not act based on speculation or rumour. Our assertions are evidence-based and products on credible intelligence,” part of the statement said.

The group’s spokesman, also insisted, that the “treacherous acts” that led to the arrest of his boss were facilitated by Kenyan government, adding that Uba’s political enemies should not use Kanu’s predicament against the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Anambra State.

“We, therefore, warn unscrupulous elements and ‘One chance politicians’ using the name of IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary to dish out a fake press statement to stop such criminality immediately.

“Those behind this evil should know that we will unravel their identity. They can’t hide for too long. They will incur the unmitigated wrath of IPOB if they don’t stop this nonsense.

“For the benefit doubt, IPOB has only linked the betrayal and abduction of our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to President Uhuru Kenyetta of Kenya, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Kenya, Kenyan’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Willfred Machage and the Nigerian Government. Other collaborators in this heinous crime will be made public based on incontrovertible evidence.

“But for now, we restate that Senator Ifeanyi Uba has not been found to have any hand in it. His political opponents should try other ways of settling scores with him and leave IPOB and our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu out of it. We must trace those behind this and they will regret their action for dragging IPOB into the zoo’s politics and for impersonation.

“We, therefore, urge members of the public to disregard the said fake press release and shun any purported statement from IPOB that is not from a credible source or our usual channels,” Powerful added in the statement. (SaharaReporters)

Woman Infected With HIV By Boss, Sacked Now Loses Case In Court |RN

blackwoman

A receptionist who accused her boss of infecting her with HIV and then sacking her has lost the 14-year court battle.

The woman told Kenya’s Employment and Labour Relations Court that she had a long-running affair with the man.

She said they met in September 2000 when both were employed at the man’s family business. Her lover was a supervisor in the firm.
The woman was fired in November of the same year on claims she was disrespectful to the managing director.

Later, the man, too, left the family business to set up his own company. He hired his lover as a receptionist and they continued their affair, according to court papers.

The woman said she had been tested before the affair and she was HIV-negative, but after their relationship, she was tested positive.

She claimed her lover became hostile when she broke the news to him. There were multiple claims of assault by both sides. The woman filed a case alleging unfair dismissal in 2004.

Last Thursday, the court threw out her case, with the judge terming it a case of sour grapes.

Justice Nduma Nderi found that the woman, named as BO to protect her identity, worked as a receptionist but did not prove her case against the man.

The judge, however, determined that the case before him was more than an employment case as it involved an affair between the two.

“What is without a doubt is that there was an emotional relationship between the plaintiff and the respondent which may not be fully explained by their having worked together for two different companies.

“The many criminal complaints by each of them against the other is a pointer to this untoward relationship. It is difficult to tell if any cause of action that may have arisen from this relationship falls or not within the jurisdiction of this court,” Nduma ruled.

BREAKING: Kenya Supreme Court Annuls Presidential Election |The Republican News

Uhuru-Kenyatta

Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta

Kenya’s Supreme Court has nullified the result of the August 8 presidential election won by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

In a ruling issued on Friday, the court said the electoral board committed “irregularities and illegalities” during last month’s vote, harming the integrity of the election.

The court ordered another presidential election to be held within 60 days.

“The declaration [of Kenyatta’s win] is invalid, null and void,” said Judge David Maraga, announcing the verdict of four out of the six judges.

No Kenya presidential election has ever been nullified.

Maraga saying the election commission “failed, neglected or refused to conduct the presidential election in a manner consistent with the dictates of the constitution”.

The protest was brought before the Supreme Court by opposition leader Raila Odinga, who lost to Kenyatta.

Kenyatta was announced the winner with 54 percent of the vote – but Odinga claimed the election was rigged with electronic voting results hacked into and manipulated in favour of Kenyatta.

Kenya’s electoral commission had said there was a hacking attempt but it failed. International election observers said they saw no interference with the vote.

Odinga supporters erupted in jubilation after the decision was announced.

“This is an unprecedented ruling,” Odinga said outside the court. “This is a triumph for the people of Kenya.”

He condemned members of the electoral board and vowed to press for criminal proceedings.

“We have no faith at all in the electoral commission as currently constituted. They have committed criminal acts,” said Odinga.

“Most of them actually belong to the jail and, therefore, we are going to ask for prosecution of all the electoral commission officers who have caused this monstrous crime against the people of Kenya.”

Odinga’s lawyer had asked the court to invalidate Kenyatta’s win, saying a scrutiny of the forms used to tally the votes had anomalies that affected nearly five million votes.

Gilbert Deya,’Miracle Babies’ Pastor Extradicted To Kenya To Face Charges |RN

gilbert-deya

Pastor Gilbert Deya

The UK has extradited a self-styled Kenyan pastor, who claimed he created miraculous pregnancies, to Kenya to face child-trafficking charges. Gilbert Deya’s extradition came after he failed in his decade-long legal battle to remain in the UK.

He denied charges of stealing five children between 1999 and 2004 when he appeared in court in Nairobi.Concerns were first raised about the conduct of Mr Deya, who ran a church in London, in a BBC investigation in 2004. Infertile or post-menopausal women who attended the Gilbert Deya Ministries church in Peckham, south-east London, were told they could have “miracle” babies. But the babies were always “delivered” in backstreet clinics in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital.

Mr Deya later moved to Scotland, and was arrested in Edinburgh in 2006 under an international arrest warrant issued by Kenya. His Gilbert Deya Ministries is being investigated by the UK Charity Commission for alleged mismanagement. “Our statutory inquiry into Gilbert Deya Ministries is ongoing. We are currently considering the implication of Gilbert Deya’s extradition on our investigation,” the commission said in a statement.

A former stonemason who moved to London from Kenya in the mid-90sSet up the Gilbert Deya Ministries as a registered charity, with African and Asian branchesKnown for his blend of charismatic, performance-style preachingHad income of £652,800 ($858,000) for the financial year ending December 2015.

Spent £609,300 Described by UK Labour MP David Lammy as a “modern-day snake-oil salesman” Says he was consecrated as an Archbishop by a US evangelist in 1992.

When the BBC asked Mr Deya during its 2014 investigation how he explained the births of children with DNA different to that of their alleged parents, the 65-year-old Mr Deya said: “The miracle babies which are happening in our ministry are beyond human imagination.”

It is not something I can say I can explain because they are of God and things of God cannot be explained by a human being.”Kenya’s police spokesman Charles Owino told the BBC that Mr Deya had arrived in Nairobi aboard a Kenya Airways flight following his extradition. Mr Deya had opposed his extradition, saying he feared being tortured and sentenced to death.

In 2007, his wife, Mary, was sentenced to two years in prison in Kenya after being convicted of stealing a baby. In 2011, she was sentenced to three years in jail after being convicted of stealing another child.

Desperate women, some past the menopause and others who were infertile, were convinced that being prayed for by Mr Deya and travelling to Kenya would result in a child. Once there, they were convinced by Mrs Deya and others that they were experiencing labour and taken to illegal clinics where they believed they had given birth. But they were actually given babies which had been taken from local women.
