Contrary to the impressing that the South East and South-South Governors and politicians, particularly the National and State Assembly lawmakers, were taken unawares before it established, the Eastern Security Network, ESN, the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB has made public the letter it wrote to them, through its leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, before it established the security outfit.
The Biafra agitating group stated that it informed the Governors and politicians of the two regions on the imperative and implication of not having a security outfit before it came up with ESN when it became clear that they were not ready to protect their people.
Mazi Kanu had in a letter he personally signed, dated May 15, 2020, addressed to the South East and South-South Governors, National and State Assembly lawmakers, and Security agencies in South-East and South-South, informing them about IPOB’s establishment of ESN, to stop alleged siege on South-East and South-South communities, allegedly perpetrated by alien invaders and sponsored killer mercenaries from it said are from the Sahel.
According to the latter which was made available to newsmen through OPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary Emma Powerful, the pro-Biafra group said it decided to make the letter public because IPOB has been accused at various times of being reluctant to reach out to the elected political class in the crucial project of liberating Biafra land from the vicious and deadly grip of killer herdsmen, terrorists, religious and territorial expansionism, allegedly tacitly tolerated encouraged by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
IPOB letter reads in part, “This day May 15, 2020, we wish to inform Governors, National and State Houses of Assembly Members of Southeast and South-South States, Security of Southeast and South-South, your Excellencies and Honorables, that It is no longer news that our communities are under siege from alien invaders and sponsored killer mercenaries from the Sahel.”

“Even President Muhammadu Buhari had himself recently confirmed this when he pointed to foreign Fulani elements as the core culprits in this murderous campaign.
“It is against this background and at this auspicious moment that the Covid 19 pandemic lockdown is in force; and when the fault lines in the area of our collective security and protection of our vulnerable communities have all the more been in the limelight that we now feel compelled to bury the hatchet and reach out to you to bring your good offices to bear.
“I am therefore by this communication extending hands of fellowship to you while inviting you to advert your minds to your obligations to live up to your conditional duties and responsibilities in initiating laws and policies that will impact positively on our people, especially in regard to the security of lives, property and protection of our borders against those that levy terror and jihadism.
“There is an ongoing and well-planned attack by supremacists against our people and we urge you all to collaborate with IPOB in the onerous task of keeping our communities safe.
“We urge the state legislators, in collaboration with the Governors to as a matter of extreme urgency, pass legislation that will engender coordinated security outfits to tackle these menaces.
“IPOB is committed to assisting in this regard if called upon to do so. You can take umbrage in the fact that you are the ones possessing the constitutional mandate to initiate economic and social policies for our region in a way that will even encourage Biafran entrepreneurs in the diaspora to look homewards.
“Your intervention is much more urgent because of the portent existential political and economic threats to our collective existence. Though not generally known, the Constitution of Nigeria, by implication, allows us, and any cohesive group of aggrieved Nigerians to seek self-determination and autonomy as a people.
“This is specifically provided for under Articles 1 & 20 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights, ratified and domesticated by Nigeria in 1983 at CAP A9, Laws of Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
“Why then are you not taking the expected and appropriate legislative measures to enforce such clear statutory provisions? Why are our lawmakers not having the appetite to see what the law says? Why are our people suffering as a consequence of this inaction?
“This is the kernel of this communication. It, therefore, requires your urgent and most serious consideration.
“In the interim, we demand answers as to why you saw fit to proscribe IPOB. While pondering, you must know that Biafran youths will remain unhappy with you unless and until you de-proscribe IPOB.
“While awaiting your response, please accept my assurances that for as long as the interest of our people remains paramount in all your official reckonings, the IPOB shall remain amenable to consulting with you, going forward.” (Vanguard News)
The Nigerian Army has deployed combat helicopters, gun trucks and soldiers to search some forests in the South-East states where the Eastern Security Network, recently launched by Nnamdi Kanu, is suspected to be camping.
SaharaReporters learnt that the military search had been ongoing for days, and has no time frame, as the army was acting on “orders from above.”
From the drones and hidden cameras believed to be installed by the ESN, a video captured the Nigerian Army helicopters and their vehicles and soldiers searching for the camp of the ESN to make arrests.
Kanu, a leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, on December 12, launched the ESN, saying the regional security outfit, just like Amotekun in the South-West, would help tackle crime.
“The Nigerian Army that is supposed to fight Boko Haram were seen everywhere searching for the camp of Eastern Security Network team. But they forgot they are dealing with sophisticated men. There are cameras and drones everywhere watching them,” an official told Saharareporters.
“If the Nigerian Armed Forces attack the ESN, the people of Southern Kaduna, the Middle Belt, and the South-West must use that opportunity to flush out the Fulanis in their region. The Nigerian Army will disintegrate, and all will be free,” another aggrieved official added.
Two days after Kanu launched the ESN, the Yoruba’s socio-cultural group, Afenifere, lent its support, noting that Nigeria must embrace regional policing as the only remedy to insecurity.
The Afenifere National Publicity Secretary, Yinka Odumakin, in an interview with SaharaReporters, had stated this, adding that the distorted federal police could no longer secure the country; hence the establishment of regional security outfits to protect lives and property.
He said, “It is seen that the central policing in Nigeria has collapsed, and the regional policing is not a new thing in this country. And, I tell you, we are back to the era of regional policing.
“The security challenges have gone beyond what the Nigeria police can handle, and since we have had regional policing before, we are back into the era again.”
When asked if this is commendable and needed, he said, “Kanu is doing what is good for his region.”
The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig-Gen Sagir Musa, could not be reached for comments on the deployment of the aircraft.
The newly formed Eastern Security Network by the leader of IPOB, Maazi Nnamdi Kanu has warned various vigilantes in old Eastern region not be used by politicians to attack their security personnel.
IPOB in its press release gave the warning and asked these vigilantes to desist from being used by fraudulent politicians who want to use it as a pretence to call in the Nigerian military.
The press release is below
IPOB PRESS RELEASE 28/12/2020
WOE BETIDE ANY COMMUNITY WHERE ESN PERSONNEL IS ATTACKED- IPOB
Through Intelligence gathering, it has come to the knowledge of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, under the command of our Leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, that the treacherous Governors of the Old Eastern Region, are now recruiting traditional rulers, President Generals and politicians to moblise some local vigilantes to engage Eastern Security Network, ESN in their various localities. The game plan is to orchestrate crisis between the vigilante groups and ESN to pave the way for Nigeria soldiers to attack ESN personnel.
We therefore, wish to warn all local vigilantes in every state of Biafra who have been/may be contacted or are being recruited by the masterminds of this evil agenda through the traditional rulers and President Generals (PGs) of any community or town in Biafraland to attack ESN operatives to have a rethink. Embarking on such unholy mission is suicidal!
Anyone, vigilante group, community, traditional ruler or President General, political elite or anybody under any guise who will connive with the enemy to expose or attack ESN in their locality will live in eternal regret of such satanic mission. It’s not a threat but a promise!
Is it not ridiculous and stupidity that these bunch of idiots who could not mobilise in search of Fulani terrorists maiming and raping women in their communities, destroying their crops and slaughtering them like cows, are now mobilising to go after ESN – a security outfit established to protect Biafrans against the Invaders? Instead of mobilising to stop those on a mission to takeover their ancestral lands these fools without any modicum of shame are busy conniving with the enemies of Biafra to sabotage ESN – their only defense line and last hope of survival.
We want to make it clear that leaders of any community in Biafra land where any ESN personnel is attacked will pay dearly for such attack. In the same way, the Governor of any state where the security outfit is attacked shall also be held responsible. Any traditional ruler, PG and vigilante group who collaborates with the Nigeria military to attack ESN operatives should be prepared to bear the bitter consequences of his treachery.
ESN is not a Biafran Army but a mere vigilante group set up to defend the people of the Old Eastern region against terrorists and criminals responsible for the growing insecurity in the region. ESN is not after law-abiding citizens but criminals. Members of the outfit have not molested any law abiding citizens but have remained in the forests to rid our land of terrorists and ensure our farms are safe again for our people to resume farming activities. They have done nothing to warrant any attack more so when the real terrorists and bandits are still killing and maiming innocent locals daily unchallenged by the highly compromised security agencies.
ESN is a child of necessity which has come to stay. The failure of governors from the South East and South South to float a regional security outfit to protect the people against terrorists gave birth to ESN to do what the cowardly governors have failed to do. It’s the people’s movement and no amount of sabotage can stop it. Anyone standing in its way shall be crushed.
May we also advise the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to stop dissipating energy towards stopping ESN, and rather channel it against Boko Haram, ISWAP, bandits and other terrorists rampaging the North. They should be concerned about rescuing the North from the enclave of terrorists instead of wasting resources to hunt down ESN personnel securing Biafra land against terrorists.
We specifically warn Gov. Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State not to push us any further against the wall. We have tolerated his madness enough. His kinsmen and friends should advise him to stop curting the wrath of IPOB because he doesn’t have the dancing steps of the music he wants to play. He cannot sacrifice Biafran freedom on the altar of his imaginary Presidental ambition. Umahi must re-trace his steps now and not test our resolve to protect our land.
COMRADE EMMA POWERFUL MEDIA AND PUBLICITY SECRETARY FOR IPOB
■ Coronavirus: Umahi directs aggressive awareness campaign in 140 communities
By Chijioke Agwu, Abakaliki
Chairman of South Governor’s Forum and Governor of Ebonyi state, David Umahi, yesterday said the region does not need the security outfit recently launched by the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) ,Nnamdi Kanu, to protect the zone.
Kanu recently launched Eastern Security Network(ESN) to protect the zone from Fulani herdsmen and other security challenges, saying the outfit became imperative because of the failure of the governors and leaders of the zone to take proactive measures towards the protection of lives and property of the people.
But Umahi on Friday insisted that the region remains the safest in the entire nation and does not need Kanu’s outfit.
Umahi who stated this while briefing journalists in his office in Abakaliki urged the people to disregard the purported security outfit, noting that the governors and leaders of the region were doing everything within their powers to protect the lives and property of the citizens and that of those from other regions living in the area.
He expressed worry that some youths from the region allowed themselves to be engaged for the destruction of lives and property, vowing that leaders of the zone will resist the outfit.
“Our region remains the safest and nobody can controvert this. And so, our brother said he has formed security outfit for the southeast. It is very laughable and should be totally ignored.
“I commend very highly the Southeast Governors. It is only in the Southeast that the leaders are being castigated openly. It is the duty of the Governors to protect the lives of the citizens and also the citizens of other regions living in their states that are not from Southeast. I want them to ignore the side distractions.
“We are doing a lot in education of our people, payment of salaries, infrastructure development and most especially the security of our people. No Governor will come openly to tell you A to Z what he is doing about security. But I want it to be debated whether Southeast is not the safest in the country.
“We need to warn that our youths should desist from being engaged for the destruction of lives and property. During the #EndSARS, this happened in all the states of the Southeast. The Governors of Southeast will no longer tolerate that. We continue to keep our eyes on the ball to ensure that anybody living under our care is protected”, he said.
Speaking on the COVID-19 pandemic, Governor Umahi directed strict enforcement of the coronavirus protocols to contain the current wave of the disease in all parts of the country.
“I am directing that church services should not last more than two hours. I am directing that we should step up our testing. Before the end of January, we must have accomplished the presidential taskforce target of 450 people tested in each of the 13 LGAs. I have suspended large gathering of people in Ebonyi State. We have directed that wearing of nose mask is very compulsory in all public places and in our homes,” he said.
Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has declared that failure of Southeast governors to secure the lives and property of Igbo people led to the formation of the Eastern Security Network.
In a statement he issued yesterday, Kanu said the Southeast and South-South regions have resolved to defend their territories from terrorism and extra-judicial killings.
Kanu, who accused the governors of sleeping while external forces kill their people in Biafra territory, warned that the people of the regions would not allow what happened at Oyigbo in Rivers State to repeat itself.
He said it was now the responsibility of his generation to defend themselves and their fatherland against the external aggression of Fulani terrorists and their hegemonic tendencies.
The IPOB Leader maintained that all ethnic groups in Igboland are well represented in the security outfit, and expressed the confidence that every city, town and village would be protected from terrorism, kidnapping, destruction of farmlands, rape, killings, armed robbery, illegal occupation of forests and river banks by marauding killers from the Sahel, among others.
His words: “For years, our mothers have not been able to go to their farms for fear of being raped and cut into pieces. Our invaders, some of them from Sene-Gambia are in our villages raping and killing people at will.
“The Delta State Government has inaugurated Operation Delta Hawk, a security outfit in the classic fragmented approach of the Southeast to issues of national importance.
“The West has made effort to combat terrorism in their territory through Amotekun and even Miyetti Allah had the guts to float a vigilante outfit that has spread to every nook and cranny of the country with the support of the Presidency and northern governors.”
Kanu wondered why governors of the Southeast have allowed themselves to become fragmented for fear of displeasing their masters, adding that the Eastern Security Network was modeled after Amotekun in the West and Miyetti Allah vigilante group in the North to protect the South-South and Southeast from bandits and terrorists.
“We have allowed ourselves to become willing tools of the caliphate in our destruction. Unfortunately too, some Igbo people have been cajoled and intimidated to the point where they now deny their own identity.
“We present our first and last line of defence, the Eastern Security Network to end years of terrorism in our land,” he added.
