SHOCK: Another Cancellation Looms As INEC Has No Result Sheet For Inspection

There is palpable apprehension over the results of the presidential and National Assembly elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC] on February 23, 2019.

Sources have revealed that fear of cancellation of the election result is looming as, 12 days after, INEC has no result sheets for inspection by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP], Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

ElombahNews had reported on March 6 that one week after INEC declared President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the president-elect, the electoral umpire has failed to provide explanations on discrepancies noted in the results of the February 23 presidential election it announced last Wednesday.

It was also reported that the Court of Appeal ordered INEC to allow Atiku Abubakar and his party have unfettered access to all certified copies of the materials used in conducting the 2019 elections.

That court order is reportedly causing tension in INEC as to what to do.

It was also gathered that, soon after the court ruling, INEC on Wednesday ordered its legal department to look into the ruling to advise it appropriately, a source in the know revealed.

It is now two weeks after the conduct of the elections but it seems the Electoral Commission does not have full results in its kitty for inspection.

Worse still is the fact that INEC does not have result sheets and other materials it used for collation of the results, causing anxiety and fears of annulment of elections aftermath of court ruling on Wednesday.

Even of concern is why INEC has yet to provide details of the outcome of the polls either on its website or at its state offices.

Checks conducted through INEC online portal, calls to its states’ offices, wards, local governments, federal constituencies and senatorial districts showed no physical collation or online release of the results.

This is causing fears the election results may have been cooked as efforts were rather placed on declaring winners than following processes as allowed by extant laws before declaration of election results could be done.

When Daily Mail enquired from Oluwole Osaze-Uzi, INEC’s Director of Voter Education and Publicity, it was not successful.

Also, attempts to speak with Festus Okoye, INEC’s National Commissioner on Voter Education was also unsuccessful as his phone rang out.

But several sources told Daily Mail that it should normally take few weeks to collate all election materials “owing to the magnitude of the election and the materials used.

“Nigeria is a large country, we shouldn’t be hasty in some issues but I can agree with you that at least all the materials and equipment used should have been at states’ offices.”

Asked why state offices are yet to have the equipment and materials, he said state offices should be asked or INEC “higher authority would be in a position to answer that.”

A source at the legal department of INEC told Daily Mail on phone that “it was always going to be tough providing the materials the court has ordered.

“I don’t know why materials used during the election have not be submitted but I am not in a position to speak – I am in the legal department, my mandate is not to speak on issues like this.”

According to her, “There should be thing to inspect, in fact all things being sought should be available for a petitioner to examine – that’s what all relevant laws in the country says.”

When asked what if the petitioner cannot be provided the materials being sought, she responded, “That is left for the court to decide, but it could mean cancellation of result because you can’t announce nothing for something.”  (ElombahNews)

Ballot Snatching: President Buhari Sanctions Extrajudicial Killing |RN

Buhari-security-statement

Muhammadu Buhari

By Ike A. Offor, Editor

It has been a week of topsy-turvy political debates following the statement by President Buhari during his party, APC Caucus meeting after the election postponement by INEC.

The president trying to send a very strong statement to would-be political thugs whose intentions would be to snatch ballot boxes during the upcoming elections, gave out a very strong words that is creating euphoria in the polity. But it appears the statement is one perhaps too strong to have come from the president himself, who primary job is to protect lives and the constitution.

The president in the very statement that has created a lot of euphoria said that he has given order to the security agents to deal ruthlessly with anyone who snatches ballot box during the election.

In his own words:

“I really gave the military and police order to be ruthless. Anybody who thinks he has enough influence in his locality to lead a body of thugs to snatch ballot boxes or disturbs the voting system, will do so at the expense of his own life”.

A lot of nerves have clearly been bruised by the INEC action of not agreeing to staggered elections, a process the opposition considered a plan by the ruling party to rig itself back into power.

Though, this accusation of staggered election, where INEC reportedly would conduct the election in 26 states, which are mainly the considered strong states of APC, leaving states considered strongholds of the opposition.

So many, speculations have been flying around to buttress this purported plans of the ruling party, APC. But many still remain meer speculations or conspiracy theory.

So, this frustration may have given rise to statement by the president ordering the security agents to shoot at sight any ballot box snatchers, whose intention is to influence the outcome of the election in any polling booth. Though this statement did not single out any specific political party, many sees it as a pretence to tell the security forces to kill the opposition and frame them as ballot snatchers. Other said that there are electoral laws and they should be the guiding light for electoral offenses and not extrajudicial killing.

Another argument is the legality of such dictatorial or sanctioning of extrajudicial killing. And for the fact that this statement is coming from the president made many furious. Many lawyers, senior advocate of the Nigeria, SAN, and others have totally condemned the order by Buhari that has no regard for the constitution of the country.

But one of the senior advocates of Nigeria, who is also the Spokesman for the Buhari Campaign Organisation Mr Festus Keyamo, has said that Buhari is right and within the ambit of the constitution. But fell short to telling the public whether death sentence is passed by the president or by the honourable court after due process.

Mr Festus Keyamo said that “ballot box snatching is armed robbery and its penalty is death by firing squad”. This has angered many lawyers and lawmakers like Senator Dino Melaye, who was in the television studio debate “The Verdict” against Festus Keyamo.

It was a heated debate where the lawmaker accused Keyamo of supporting extrajudicial killing despite the fact that he is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

Since making this statement there have been barrages of criticisms and a lot of arguments in support of the statement from Mr President. Some are supporting Buhari while many seem to go against it but obviousy the president is not withdrawing his words, which means that those found this may end up dead.

DSS Withdraws The Invitation For INEC Commissioner In Charge Of Logistics, Others |RN

dssoperatives1

DSS Officers

The Department of State Security Services, DSS has withdrawn its invitation to the National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in charge of logistics, Okechukwu Ibeanu.

It was earlier reported that Ibeanu alongside Chidi Nwafor, the director of ICT; Ken Ukeagu, director of procurement; Osaze Uzzi, director of voter education and publicity; and Bimbo Oladunjoye, the assistant director of ICT were asked to report at DSS offices in Abuja by 2 pm on Tuesday.

It’s unclear why the agency would drop its decision but sources hinted that some prominent Nigerians intervened because of the “timing”.

This invitation was initially believed to be related to the fiasco that led to the postponement of the general election by one week.

Mahmood Yakubu, a professor and INEC chairman, had blamed the postponement on sabotage and logistical issues.  (Nairaland)

Buhari Orders DSS To Arrest INEC Federal Commissioners In Charge Of Operations, Others |RN

DSSoperatives

By Ike Offor, Editor

Buhari is planning to sabotage and shift further the rescheduled February 23rd Saturday election and has directed DSS to invite and detain the Federal Commissioner of INEC in charge of operations Prof. Okechukwu Ibeanu. Though the chairman or head of Operations and Logistics is the alleged Buhari’s niece, Mrs Amina Zakari, she is not in the picture here and the question remains why.

The Refusal of INEC to go ahead with staggered elections during the aborted Feb 16 election which ruined Buhari, APC rigging plan is the reason for the new offensive action against INEC to intimidate them into submission.

This was contained in the press release from CUPP, which was delivered by their Spokesman, Mr Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere.

In the statement CUPP called upon all Nigerians to rise up against this ongoing  tyrannical leadership abuse and madness which have the potentiality to throw Nigeria into electoral violence that will enable Buhari execute his lawless order that security agents publicly begin killing of people under the guise of ballot snatching.

Also, he said that the idea to detain the Federal Commissioner today was on the sole instigation of the former DG of the DSS, Lawan Daura, who still runs the agency by proxy and convinced Buhari to allow the use of the DSS to clampdown on INEC to force them to do their bidding or sabotage rescheduled election and stop it from holding.

The statement reads as follows:

Buhari planning to sabotage and shift Saturday election with instruction to DSS to massively arrest all INEC top leadership who refused to be compromised. DSS acting Buhari script to detain Prof Ibeanu INEC Commissioner in charge of  operations to make room for  her sister Amina Zakari to take charge of operations or emerge acting INEC Chairman if Buhari and APC succeed in sabotaging Saturday election and forcing INEC chairman out

It is also very interesting to see that the head chairman of operations, who is reportedly Buhari’s niece, Mrs Amina Zakari is not in the picture in all these discussion of election postponement. Why is she not being reigned in for her lack of competence if the fault came form oeprations and logistics? Why is being sidelined here and not even mentioned by all quarters, rather members of her department are being harassed by DSS and the president.

IPOB: Election Boycott Call Off Forced INEC Into Late Polls Cancellation |RN

Jeff Amechi Agbodo, Onitsha

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has alleged that the late called-off of the election boycott declared by its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, forced the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Federal government to postpone the scheduled election.

Kanu, had on Thursday night called-off the boycott order he declared, calling on IPOB member and people of South East and parts of South-South zones to go out to cast their votes.

A statement by the Media and Publicity Secretary of IPOB, Emma Powerful, said that the late call-off of the election boycott forced INEC to postpone the election for one week because according to him, the move destabilised the planned rigging of the election by the ruling party.

He alleged that the postponement of the election was to give the electoral umpire time to strategise since the planned use of IPOB boycott to rig the election failed through the sudden suspension of the boycott.

Powerful said: “Events surrounding the postponement of the Nigerian presidential election previously scheduled for February 16, 2019, are a confirmation that IPOB’s decision to lift the boycott was a masterstroke that took the cabal by surprise.

“The move by IPOB apex leadership to call off the boycott made it virtually impossible for the APC administration to proceed to rig the elections on the account that IPOB would boycott the polls. It is now clear for the world to see that some nefarious elements within the corridors of power in Aso Rock wanted so desperately use IPOB to boycott these elections in order to justify their already perfected script that our boycott would have made it possible for them to emerge victorious.

“By calling off the boycott, Buhari and his cabal lost the initiative and were headed straight for defeat. Our leader, Kanu, is light years ahead of the intrigues and machinations that characterise politics in Nigeria. Had the leadership of our great movement, IPOB, not called off the boycott, the sham elections would have proceeded as rigged, with Buhari announced as the winner on account that IPOB boycotted the exercise.

“Anybody who is still in doubt about the potency of IPOB will undoubtedly have a rethink after this. Quite obviously, the IPOB boycott call off took the Nigerian corrupt establishment unawares. A simple statement from our leader has exposed voting in Nigeria as a huge joke. Let the riggers go back and plan how to rig well. What a country, what a contraption!

“In effect, our leader calling off the boycott was a huge shock they were unable to manage. Lt. Gen. Tukur Burarai’s threat and orchestrated army violence against peaceful IPOB in the run up to February 16 were all designed to maximise the impact of the intended boycott because that was the outcome they desired.

“This plan fell apart as soon as soon as IPOB called off the boycott. Therefore, they had no choice than to postpone the elections. That Nigeria is not voting today is due to what some people have called the IPOB effect.

“IPOB’s late announcement of the lifting of the boycott was what led to this last minute postponement by INEC, because they had ample time throughout the week to postpone the elections but failed to do so. The fear of IPOB is the beginning of wisdom, only fools pretend otherwise,” Powerful stated.    (The Sun)

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has expressed shock that the presidential election was postponed by the Independent National Electoral Commission, a few hours before its conduct.

Election Shift: I’m Deeply Disappointed With INEC – Buhari |The Republican News

                                           President Muhammadu Buhari

John Ameh, Katsina

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed deep disappointment over the postponement of the presidential and National Assembly polls by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The President lamented that, despite giving all the necessary support to the electoral umpire, the exercise was postponed just hours to voting and after Nigerians had taken the pains to travel to vote.

“I am deeply disappointed that despite the long notice given and our preparations both locally and internationally, the Independent National Electoral Commission postponed the presidential and National Assembly elections within hours of its commencement,” Buhari said in a statement he signed on Saturday morning in Daura, Katsina State.

However, he asked INEC to ensure the safety of election materials already distributed and appealed to Nigerians to remain law abiding.

Buhari also stated that he had decided to relocate to Abuja from Daura to ensure that the meeting INEC called to hold with stakeholders was successfully.

His statement reads further, “We now urge INEC to ensure not only that materials already distributed are safe and do not get into wrong hands, but that everything is done to avoid the lapses that resulted in this unfortunate postponement, and ensure a free and fair election on the rescheduled dates.

“While I reaffirm my strong commitment to the independence, neutrality of the electoral umpire and the sanctity of the electoral process and ballot, I urge all political stakeholders and Nigerians to continue to rally round INEC at this trying national moment in our democratic journey.

“I, therefore, appeal to all Nigerians to refrain from all civil disorder and remain peaceful, patriotic and united to ensure that no force or conspiracy derail our democratic development.”   (Punch)
