IPOB Members Remanded In Jail Since June For Treasonable Felony, Prosecutor Surprisingly Withdraws Case Today

IPOB members appearing in court before the judge

by Reporter

For a fifth time the 17 IPOB members who were ambushed and unlawfully arrested by the Nigeria Police from Ikot Ekpene Police station in Essien Udim LGA of Akwa-Ibom State as they were driving out from a venue of a Conference, are still languishing in Prison custody because their case has not been heard due to flimsy excuses.

Today, Mr Emma Bassey, a representative of IPOB States Media was on ground at Essien Udim High Court to cover the proceedings.
The IPOB Legal Team arrived in high spirits to achieve a bail for all 17 members who were facing Charges of Treasonable Felony preferred against them, but to their shock when the case was called up, the Prosecuting Counsel told the Court that they were withdrawing from the Case and wouldn’t want to continue, for personal reasons.

The State Media Personnel, Ngozichukwu Ada-Dav spoke with the head of the IPOB Legal Team Barrister Chijioke who again confirmed that the case could not be heard because of the withdrawal or discontinuation by the Prosecuting Counsel.
On this note, the IPOB lawyer Bar Chijioke could not raise for objection because it is the duty of Minister for Justice to prosecute and not his.

The matter was adjourned to 6th Day of November 2019, for a Plea and bail.
Hopefully, by this date, there wouldn’t be any cause for further incarceration of these innocent IPOB members whose crime was carrying Biafra flags and fliers in the bus they hired. This is another evidence of a lawless state called Nigeria.

The single crime they committed was that they were in their own bus wear Biafran uniform and with Biafran flags and fliers. The was reason enough to arrest them and tuck them away indefinitely in detention.

We shall keep you posted on the next hearing from the State High Court Essien Udim, Akwa-Ibom State.

Akpabio: Court Stops INEC From Issuing Certificate Of Return To PDP’s Chris Ekpeyong

Godswill-Akpabio                                                    Godswill Akpabio

By Alex Enumah in Abuja

Justice Valentine Ashi of a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), on Friday restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from issuing its Certificate of Return to Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) candidate, Chris Ekpeyong, winner of the Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District Seat in the just concluded National Assembly election.

Justice Ashi gave the restraining order in a short ruling on an ex parte motion filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

Akpabio in the suit No: FCT/HC/M/2680/19 and filed on February 28 prayed the court for, “An order granting leave to him to apply for a judicial review for the issuance of a writ of Mandamus, prohibition, injunction and other declarative reliefs sought against the respondent (INEC).”

He also prayed the court to direct the respondent to stay further action “particularly further action in respect of issuance of certificate of return to any candidate in respect of the seat of senator representing Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial district on the account of election held on the 23rd February, 2019.”

The ex parte application which was supported by an affidavit deposed to by one Daniel Idoko, was argued by Akpabio’s lawyer, Sunday Ameh SAN.

In a short ruling Justice Ashi, held that the case of Akpabio is meritorious and that there is need to keep things in status quo.

“Leave is hereby granted to the applicant to apply for judicial review for the issuance of a writ of Mandamus, prohibition, injunction and other declaratory reliefs against the respondent.”

“Leave granted shall operate as stay of further action of the respondent and particularly in respect of issuance of certificate of return to any candidate in respect of the seat as sought by the applicant,” Justice Ashi held.

While adjourning the matter till March 8 for hearing of the substantive suit, the judge however directed that parties must first address him on the issue of jurisdiction on the next sitting.  (ThisDay)

Cultural life of the people of Uyo, Akqa Ibom State,  was temporarily halted when Ekpo, a popular but dreaded masquerade was knocked down by a hit and run driver, on Thursday.

The Ekpo, who nobody knew where he came from, was said have been hit when the driver, who was in a high speed, tried to avoid another vehicle on the road, and in the process drove over the masquerade, in the Use Offot axis of Uyo, close to the University of Uyo main campus.

An eyewitness said it was initially thought the masquerade, which most people in Akwa Ibom consider to be spirit from the other world, would stand up and continue with his parade. But after most time, it was obvious that he was badly hurt.

“People could not go to help him because ekpo is a dreaded culture. They just stood at a distance to observe him writhe in pains till he died,” a witness told Saturday Sun.

The state commissioner for information, Mr Charles Udoh, who confirmed the incident said, when he was informed that ekpo has been killed , he called the appropriate authorities to go and evacuate the corpse.

“The unfortunate thing is that he was dead before help could come his way. And knowing how people regard ekpo in our clime, maybe, if he was a normal person that was knocked, passers-by could have stopped to help.

“But ekpo is not easy to deal with, especially the female folks. Taking him with the mask to the hospital could cause a serious stir. So maybe people were just waiting, looking on till he died,” Udoh said.

The state police command said the case had so far not been reported in any of the divisions around where the ekpo was knocked down.

The command public relations officers (PPRO), Mr Elkana Bala (DSP) told Saturday Sun that when he heard the news he had called the DPOs within Uyo but all of them expressed ignorant of the case.

“We have not received that report. When I saw the report online I asked all the DPOs from that axis and they said they never received such a report. If it is not reported, I cannot confirm. Maybe they just went and carried the corpse. My response is, we have not received that report,” Bala said.  (The Sun)
