The 42 persons kidnapped by bandits from the Government Science College Kagara, Niger State, have been released, Premium Times reports.

A total of 27 students, three staff members and 12 members of their family were abducted after the attack on the school in the early hours of Wednesday.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Niger governor, Mary Noel-Berje, confirmed their release to our reporter on Sunday evening.

She added that the kidnapped victims are on their way to Minna, where they will be formally received by the governor.

But the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Niger State, Mary Noel, later described as ‘rumour’, the purported release of abducted students and members of staff of Government Science College, Kagara.

Earlier report announcing their release quoted a statement credited to the CPS by some credible online platforms that they were released and on their to Minna from Birnin Gwari area of Kaduna State.

However, when contacted, Mrs Mary said the students were not yet released though the negotiations and discussions with bandits are on their final stage.

“The students have not been released but we are hopeful they will be released soon, we just received the kidnapped NSTA passengers and that is to show the Government commitment to making sure all the kidnapped residents of the state are free and reunited with their loved ones,” she said.
