Internal memo circulated on 17th of January 2017 by the acting Dean, Student Affairs, Dr Sulaiman Sani Kankara concerning all students clubs and association in Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University in Katsina state is cause for concern.
As the wordings of the memo shows the University has banned all other clubs or associations but Muslim or Islamic in the University from that very date.
How could some folks in the country be flagrantly faulting the laws and constitution in the country and in a very provocative manner daring the other religious faiths in the country?
One cannot believe that such action and mannerism can really manifest itself in Nigeria in this time of the century. How could the Dean circulate such internal memo and what are the legal implications for him and the University?
Already in Nigeria, the Northern Nigerian Muslims have refused to live by the constitution of the country but Islamic sharia law, dividing the country into two parts under two constitutions. Are they now extending this law to universities and for all instead for Muslims?
This must be condemned and the University should be made to denounce this internal memo and perhaps tender apology to the students and the country.
Recently, Prof. Wole Soyinka opined that religion must be tamed in Nigeria or it will kill Nigeria. But the leaders of the two religious bodies in Nigeria called his words uncharitable and unkind. Perhaps, the erudite professor was right after all .
