NATIONAL Commission for Nomadic Education (NCNE) said yesterday about 4.1 million nomadic children were out of school.
Executive Secretary Prof. Bashir Usman spoke in Abuja at the opening of a four-day training on tracer study for workers.
He said the commission would add to the current enrolment of 600,000 nomadic children this year.
According to him, some of the nomadic children enrolled by the commission had dropped out of school, adding that the target of the NCNE is to have more enrolment on a sustainable basis.
“In normal school situation, pupils compete with one another but nomadic children don’t have that spirit. They compete with who owns the highest cattle and other socio-cultural factors.
“So, we have to understand why they are dropping out and then what can we do for them. And for those who have succeeded, how can they come back to give us their experiences,” he said.
Prof. Usman noted that the commission embarked on the training to plan for and trace nomadic pupils, who stopped, adding that the training will also develop capacity of workers.
“We want to change the direction of nomadic education. We want our workers to get orientation and re-orient others. We want to re-engineer ourselves and change the thinking of people,” he added.  (The Nation)
