The Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, said on Monday that the National Judicial Council was more poised than before to restore confidence in the judiciary.

The acting CJN, who doubles as the Chairman of the NJC, said the council was also ready to defend the independence and the integrity of the third arm of government.

Justice Onnoghen spoke in Abuja during the swearing in of Justices Paul Galinje and Sidi Bage, to the Supreme Court bench.

This increased the number of Justices of the Supreme Court from 15 to 17.

The NJC has recently come under fire for allegedly shielding corrupt judges following the recent raid on the houses of some judges accused of corruption by the operatives of the Department of State Services.

Speaking at the swearing in ceremony on Monday, Justice Onnoghen said the NJC would restore confidence in the nation’s judicial system and would continue to amend its rules as the need arose.

The acting CJN urged the two new Justices of the Supreme Court, not to despair over the challenges the judiciary was currently going through but to rise to defend the independence and integrity of the institution.

He said failure of the judges to defend the judiciary would mean failing Nigerian citizens who had hope in the institution. (Punchng.com)
