The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, said on Sunday that the emergency of Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu as the governor-elect of Ondo State meant that the All Progressives Congress remained a political party loved by Nigerians.
Dogara stated this in a message to congratulate Akeredolu.
The former president of the Nigerian Bar Association polled 244,842 votes to beat his closest rival, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Jegede scored 150,380 votes, while, Mr. Olusola Oke of the Alliance for Democracy, got 126,889 votes to make the third position.
The results were announced by the Chief Returning Officer appointed by the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Abdul Ganiyu-Ambali.
Dogara also said the victory was an indication that Nigerians trusted the APC and its policies to transform Nigeria.
Part of a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Turaki Hassan, read, “The election of Akeredolu and the APC in Ondo State is a clear indication of the popularity of our political party.
“I would like to congratulate my learned colleague on his victory, and also commend our great party, the All Progressives Congress, for a thorough and successful campaign.”
The Speaker noted that victory was also a challenge to the APC and urged Akeredolu to perform well in office in order not to disappoint the Ondo voters.
The statement added, “As a party, we must take our victory in Ondo seriously since the people have placed enormous trust in us.
“We must, therefore, deliver on policies that will improve their standard of living.”
The Speaker described the conduct of the poll as “peaceful,” commending INEC and security agencies for “ensuring a hitch-free exercise.”
Also, the Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, has congratulated Akeredolu on his election.
The governor also congratulated the APC and praised INEC and the security agencies for ensuring that the election was free, fair, credible and peaceful.
In a statement issued in Sokoto on Sunday by his spokesman, Mallam Imam Imam, Tambuwal said with the election over, the onus was on the political class in the state to rally round the governor to enable him to administer the state for the benefit its citizens.
“At the risk of sounding repetitive, let me reiterate what I have always said that there is time for everything. There is time for politicking and time for governance. Now that politicking is over in Ondo, I urge all stakeholders to tailor their energy towards ensuring a successful transition leading to the swearing-in of Akeredolu,” the former Speaker of the House of Representatives said.
Tambuwal urged members of the opposition to rally round the governor-elect, saying, ultimately, the true wish of the electorate had prevailed.
While urging the governor-elect to work with all the people of Ondo State to move the state forward, Tambuwal advised him to be a father-figure to all irrespective of political differences.
“All members of the APC family look forward to working with Akeredolu as the party gives Nigerians the change and progress they yearn for,” he added. (Punchng.com)
