The Ali Modu Sheriff-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State has suspended a former Deputy Governor of the state, Senator Iyiola Omisore, for allegedly engaging in anti-party activities.
However, in Ogun State, the Ahmed Makarfi-led faction of the party suspended the senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District in the Senate, Buruji Kashamu, and seven others.
The PDP faction that suspended Kashamu and others in the state is led by Sikirulai Ogundele.
The suspension of Omisore and some other PDP chieftains is contained in a statement issued on Friday and signed by the faction’s Chairman, Mr. Soji Adagunodo, and the Secretary, Mr. Bola Ajao.
Apart from Omisore, the Adagunodo-led executive also suspended the chairman of the other faction of the party, Dr. Bayo Faforiji; Bunmi Jenyo; Chief Ojo Williams and Bade Falade for the same offence.
The statement read in part, “For engaging in anti-party activities and constituting illegal parallel executive in local governments in Osun State, as well as decimating the membership of the PDP in Osun State, Osun State chapter of the PDP has suspended Senator Iyiola Omisore and four other members of the party.”
The Adagunodo-led faction also asked Omisore to clear his name with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission before seeking to participate in the affairs of the party.
One of the allies of Omisore, Mr. Diran Odeyemi, described the suspension as a joke.
He said, “The purported suspension is of no effect. It is the joke of the year and it is just to entertain some people.”
A faction of the PDP loyal to Omisore had on Thursday expelled the National Secretary of the PDP, Prof. Wale Oladipo and Adagunodo.
The factional chairman of the party, Faforiji, who made the announcement during a congress at the PDP secretariat located along Osogbo/Gbongan Road, also expelled the immediate chairman of the party, Alhaji Gani Olaoluwa, as well as secretary of the Adagunodo-led executive, Bola Ajao.
Faforiji alleged that the expelled PDP leaders were involved in instituting the suit which nearly prevented the PDP governorship candidate in Ondo State, Eyitayo Jegede, from participating in the election.
The two factions of the PDP had emerged after the congress that was held to elect new leaders of the party from ward level to state level.
Meanwhile, Oladipo had on Friday described his purported expulsion from the party by a PDP faction in Osun State as ‘a nullity and of no effect.’
As regards the party’s crisis in Ogun State, the suspension notice was contained in a statement signed by Ogundele and the Secretary, Olabode Bankole.
The statement alleged that the affected persons were suspended following a report of a panel that was constituted in June to investigate allegations of financial improprieties and anti-party activities.
However, Kashamu denied the allegations, adding that nobody could suspend him from the party.
In a statement signed by his media aide, Mr. Austin Oniyokor, Kashamu described his suspension as “a comic relief of no consequence whatsoever.” (Punchng.com)
