Ogbonnaya Ikokwu, Umuahia
Two persons were reportedly killed at Ngwa North Council Area of Abia State on Wednesday during the Peoples Democratic Party local government primary in the state.
It was gathered that trouble started when some youths in the area suspected that a former governor of the state and some party chiefs were trying to influence the result of the election at the party’s state secretariat in Umuahia to favour one of the aspirants.
It was learnt that the youths marched to the office of the Isiala Ngwa North PDP chairman to ensure that nobody manipulated the election but in the process set the office ablaze.
A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the deceased and the injured victims were personal aides to the local government party chairman.
The Abia State PDP Chairman, Chief Johnson Onuigbo, condemned the violence and asked the protesters to give peace a chance in the area.
When contacted, the Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, Ogbonaya Nta, put the casualty figure at one, adding, however, that many were injured.
He said four persons had been arrested in connection with the political crisis in the local council area, while the police had launched a manhunt for others involved in the incident. (Punch.ng.com)
