It is always exciting when debates are based on facts and figures. It makes it very matured, and educating to follow or partake in such debates. Recently, the Vice President stoke some fire by falsily claiming that the federal government for 10 years has not constructed one single road.
Doyin Okupe, a former aide to ex president Goodluck Jonathan, has answered Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s comment which said the previous administrations didn’t construct a single road in decades.
“His Excellency, Prof Yemi Osinbajo said the Federal government did not construct a single road in the last 10 years. The VP probably said this in view of the fact that based on reports made available to him almost 98% of government effort in the last decade has been devoted to roads rehabilitation,” Doyin Okupe said on social media.
“The federal road network, going by the colonial road master plan, is about 35,000km in length. By 2007, over 70% of these roads were completely unmotorable. No responsible government of the people will set aside 35000km of dilapidated and nonfunctional, often single lane roads, and embark on the construction of new ones. Therefore the efforts of the federal government in the last 10 years has been focused on the repair, rehabilitation, expansion and dualization of most of the interstate and axial road network nationwide. ”
However, the federal government between 2006 to 2015, 9 years of period, constructed the following new roads.
- Loko Oweto link road; (between Nassarawa and Benue state)
- Musa Yaradua road (Abuja International Airport road) 10 lanes
- Kubwa road (Murtala Mohammed road) 10 lanes
- Goodluck Jonathan road ; 10 lanes. FCT
- East-West road 346km; Started by OBJ in 2006. GEJ recommended and is 90% complete
- Benin bye-pass by president Olusegun Obasanjo.
Now, those who supported the remark from the Vice President, including those who handed down a challenge to the citizens, to come forth with names of roads constructed , should now bow their heads in shame. The lies and political dramas in the country is numbing. Does it mean that our politicians cannot simply be honest with simple facts, that can anyway be proven, if need be?
